5 of the best free movies to stream on Tubi, Samsung TV Plus, Pluto TV, and more this week (September 1)

    Description:
From beloved indie romances to searing action thrillers, theres plenty to watch on the best free streaming services this week.

    FULL STORY ======================================================================

Fall doesnt officially start until September 22, but we wont blame you if youre already bedding in for an extended period of hibernation. The season
for cozy movie nights is just around the corner, and youll find plenty of great subscription-free options on the best free streaming services .

Below, Ive highlighted five of the best free movies to stream on Tubi,
Samsung TV Plus, Pluto TV, and more this week from beloved indie romances to searing action thrillers. 1) Call Me by Your Name (Tubi)

    Release date: January 2018
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%
    Length: 132 minutes
    Director: Luca Guadagnino
Main cast: Timothe Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar

Call Me by Your Name , the indie movie-turned-cultural phenomenon that put actor Timothe Chalamet on the map, is streaming for free on Tubi this month.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, this Andr Aciman novel adaptation centers on a precocious American teen (Chalamet) who, while vacationing in Italy, develops feelings for his father's temporary research assistant (Armie Hammer). Call
Me by Your Name is rightly considered one of the best films of recent years for its touching story and authentic performances, but itll also leave you longing for long summer days and al fresco dining (though you may never see peaches in the same way again). 2) Collateral (Plex)

    Release date: August 2004
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 86%
    Length: 120 minutes
    Director: Michael Mann
Main cast: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo

I recommended Michael Manns Heat earlier this month , and another of the directors neo-noir thrillers, Collateral , is streaming for free on Plex this month.

This 2004 movie follows a ruthless hitman (Tom Cruise) who gets more than he bargains for when he decides to take a Los Angeles cab driver, Max (Jamie Foxx), hostage for an evening of location-hopping 'work'. Come for Cruises silver hairdo, stay for the films frenetic nightclub shootout and Manns ahead-of-its-time digital cinematography. 3) The Babadook (Plex)

    Release date: November 2014
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 98%
    Length: 94 minutes
    Director: Jennifer Kent
Main cast: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney

Also streaming on Plex this month is Jennifer Kents The Babadook , which remains my favorite Australian-made movie and one of the best directorial debuts of recent years.

Best described as a psychological horror, The Babadook follows a widowed single mother (Essie Davis) and her son (Noah Wiseman) as they reckon with
the presence of a mysterious, storybook-dwelling monster in their Adelaide home. Light on jump scares but heavy on unsettling terror, this is a smartly-made movie about the effects of grief and burnout on the human
psyche. 4) The Godfather (Pluto TV)

    Release date: March 1972
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%
    Length: 175 minutes
    Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Main cast: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton

The Godfather Part II is rightly considered one of the greatest movies of
all time, but personally, I think Francis Ford Coppolas 1972 original which is now streaming for free on Pluto TV is the best of the trilogy.

Adapted from Mario Puzos 1969 novel of the same name, The Godfather centers
on the fraught relationship between an aging crime boss (Marlon Brando) and his morally upstanding son (Al Pacino), who stands to inherit his fathers empire. This film has it all: iconic characters, iconic quotes, an iconic soundtrack, and one of the best Marlon Brando performances ever put to
screen. But you knew that already. 5) The Prestige (Samsung TV Plus)

    Release date: October 2006
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 77%
    Length: 130 minutes
    Director: Christopher Nolan
Main cast: Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine

In our ranking of the best Christopher Nolan movies , The Prestige sits above the likes of Tenet , Oppenheimer , and The Dark Knight Rises and for good reason.

This psychological thriller-cum-fantasy adventure follows two warring magicians (played by Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale) who will stop at
nothing to outdo one another in 19th-century London. The Prestige features so many twists and turns that watching it feels like a magic trick in itself (at one point, David Bowie appears), and if you can guess the ending first try, youre a smarter viewer than me. Description:
From dark fairy tales to cult horror classics, these free streaming picks
will help you swap summer sunsets for early, spooky season movie nights.

    FULL STORY ======================================================================

The season for cozy movie nights is creeping closer, which means there's no better time to find plenty of great films on the best free streaming services .

Several of this weeks free streaming picks feel especially timely as we edge toward spooky season. Sure, Halloween is still over a month away. But lets be honest, now that summers wrapped what else are we counting down to? Its the perfect time to start adding unsettling fairy tales, eerie cult classics and even some witchy vibes to your watchlist.

Below, youll find five of the best free movies to stream on Tubi, Samsung TV Plus, Pluto TV, and more this week. From dark fantasies and family-friendly action to sexy spell craft and psychological horror. 1) Pans Labyrinth (Tubi)

    Release date: 2006
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%
    Length: 120 minutes
    Director: Guillermo del Toro
Main cast: Sergi Lpez, Maribel Verd, Ivana Baquero, Doug Jones, Ariadna Gil, lex Angulo

This haunting fairy tale from director Guillermo del Toro is still one of the most beautiful and brutal movies of the 21st century.

Set in Spain, Pans Labyrinth follows Ofelia, a young girl who escapes into a world of fauns, monsters and labyrinths while her stepfather commits atrocities above the ground. Its a dark fantasy and a devastating war drama somehow rolled masterfully into one. It's the kind of film that proves fairy tales were never meant to be safe bedtime stories. 2) The Road (Fawesome, Hoopla, Kanopy, Plex, Roku)

    Release date: 2009
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 74%
    Length: 110 minutes
    Director: John Hillcoat
Main cast: Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Molly Parker, Garret Dillahunt

Based on author Cormac McCarthys Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Road is incredibly bleak (youve been warned) but also incredibly mesmerizing too.

Viggo Mortensen stars in the leading role here as a father traveling with his son through an ash-covered America after the collapse of civilization. There are flashes of violence but the film is also a poignant look at how we might carry hope when the world offers very little of it. Do only watch it when youre feeling particularly resilient though. 3) The Love Witch (Fandango at Home, Kanopy, Plex, Pluto TV)

    Release date: 2016
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%
    Length: 120 minutes
    Director: Anna Biller
Main cast: Samantha Robinson, Gian Keys, Laura Waddell, Jeffrey Vincent Parise, Jared Sanford, Robert Seeley, Jennifer Ingrum

Anna Billers retro movie The Love Witch is unlike anything else youll find streaming and its a perfect watch in the lead up to spooky season.

Shot to look like its from the 1960s, the movie tells the story of a modern witch (played by Samantha Robinson) who uses potions and spells in her quest for love. But often with unexpected and deadly results.

Its quite camp, weird and leans into satire, but its a film that will make
you laugh, cringe and convince you that youve stumbled across a lost classic. 4) Rosemarys Baby (Hoopla, Kanopy, Pluto TV)

    Release date: 1968
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%
    Length: 137 minutes
    Director: Roman Polanski
Main cast: Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer,
    Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy

Rosemarys Baby is one of the best psychological horror movies of all time. Mia Farrow plays Rosemary, a young wife who becomes increasingly paranoid
that her husband and neighbors have sinister plans for her unborn child.

Its stylish, unsettling and highly influential. And even though it's nearly
60 years since it was first released, nothing can dull the sheer dread of its final act. If youve somehow missed it, nows the time to fix that. If youve already seen it, get it on your must-watch list in the run-up to Halloween.
    5) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Samsung TV Plus)

    Release date: 2014
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 91%
    Length: 130 minutes
    Director: Matt Reeves
Main cast: Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee

The sequel to 2011s Rise of the Planet of the Apes takes the franchise to another level.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set in a post-pandemic San Francisco, it pits a fragile community of humans against Caesar (played by Andy Serkis) and his growing ape followers. The motion capture performances here are really jaw-dropping, there are some fantastic action scenes and Reeves manages to make a blockbuster about talking apes feel genuinely profound. Description:
From critically acclaimed thrillers to underrated biographical dramas, theres plenty to watch on the best free streaming services this week.

    FULL STORY ======================================================================

Fall is now well underway, and with Halloween fast approaching, youll forgive me for picking several family-unfriendly options in this weeks roundup of
    free movies to stream.

Below, Ive highlighted five of the best films available on the best free streaming services this October from critically acclaimed thrillers to underrated biographical dramas. 1) At Eternity's Gate (Plex)

    Release date: 2018
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 79%
    Length: 111 minutes
    Director: Julian Schnabel
Main cast: Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, Oscar Isaac and Mads Mikkelsen

If youve spent any time on social media in the past five years, youve
probably come across the Willem Dafoe Looking Up meme. Well, that meme comes from the criminally little-known film At Eternity's Gate , which is now streaming for free on Plex.

This unconventionally shot movie follows painter Vincent van Gogh (Willem Dafoe) in the final years of his life, as he developed his artistic style
(and grappled with his deteriorating mental health) in rural France. At Eternity's Gate is a must-watch for classic art fans, but its also a perfect showcase for the enduring acting talents of its lead star, Willem Dafoe. 2) Nightcrawler (Plex)

    Release date: 2014
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%
    Length: 117 minutes
    Director: Dan Gilroy
Main cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed and Bill Paxton

Dont let Jake Gyllenhaals recent filmography sway you: he is still one of the best actors of his generation, and Nightcrawler which is now streaming for free on Plex remains one of his very best performances.

This eerie thriller centers on Lou Bloom, a petty thief and social outcast
who finds himself sucked into the morally compromised world of Los Angeles photojournalism. Gripping from start to finish, utterly unique, and nothing
to do with the X-Men character, Nightcrawler is a dark and unsettling movie thats perfect for a gloomy Fall evening. 3) Serenity (Tubi)

    Release date: 2005
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 82%
    Length: 119 minutes
    Director: Joss Whedon
Main cast: Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin and Summer Glau

If Alien: Earth has got you in the mood for more spacefaring adventures, Joss Whedons 2005 space western Serenity is worth a visit (or re-visit) on Tubi.

This feature-length continuation of TV series Firefly follows the crew of the titular Serenity as they attempt to protect a secret government experiment namely a young girl with telepathic powers from a ruthless assassin. Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, and Summer Glau reprise their roles from Whedons cult classic series, while Chiwetel Ejiofor joins
the cast the menacing Operative. 4) Layer Cake (Pluto TV)

    Release date: 2004
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 76%
    Length: 105 minutes
    Director: Matthew Vaughn
Main cast: Daniel Craig, Michael Gambon, Sienna Miller and Colm Meaney

Ive highlighted Matthew Vaughns Layer Cake in one of these roundups before, and the directors slick crime thriller is now once again streaming for free
    on Pluto TV.

This Snatch -style movie follows an unnamed London drug dealer (Daniel Craig) whose retirement plans are scuppered when a ruthless mob boss (Kenneth Cranham) tasks him with one final job. Tom Hardy, Michael Gambon, and Sienna Miller also star in Layer Cake , which proved that Vaughn could make a successful Guy Ritchie movie without Guy Ritchie. 5) The Sixth Sense (Samsung TV Plus)

    Release date: 1999
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 86%
    Length: 107 minutes
    Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Main cast: Bruce Willis, Toni Collette, Olivia Williams and Haley Joel
    Osment

You know the line. You know the twist. But if you havent seen The Sixth Sense for a few years, the films arrival on Samsung TV Plus gives you the perfect opportunity to re-watch it (provided you own one of the best Samsung TVs , of course).

    M. Night Shyamalans 1999 classic centers on a child psychologist (Bruce Willis) who begins working with a troubled young boy, Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment). The trouble in question? Cole claims that he can see and talk to the dead. As a director, Shyamalan is an acquired taste, but The Sixth Sense which was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture remains the most universally adored movie in the filmmakers vast filmography. Description:
From Oscar-winning sci-fi adventures to iconic satirical comedies, theres plenty to watch on the best free streaming services this week.

    FULL STORY ======================================================================

Halloween is just around the corner, but Im not going to bombard you with a list of spooky-themed movies to stream on the best free streaming services just yet (those will, inevitably, come next week sorry in advance!).

Instead, below, Ive highlighted some of the best films (across all genres!) available on subscription-free streamers this October from Oscar-winning sci-fi adventures to iconic satirical comedies. 1) Apocalypse Now (Plex)

    Release date: 2019
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%
    Length: 147 minutes
    Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Main cast: Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper

One of the best Vietnam War movies ever made, Apocalypse Now , is streaming for free on Plex this month (look out for Platoon on Hoopla and Kanopy, too).

Loosely inspired by Joseph Conrads 1899 novel Heart of Darkness , this
Francis Ford Coppola-directed drama follows the journey of a special operations operative (Martin Sheen) as he attempts to hunt down and kill renegade US Army Colonel (Marlon Brando) during the Vietnam War. Come for the iconic 'Ride of the Valkyries' scene, stay for the films deep exploration of war's psychological horror (as well as Brandos menacing performance). 2) Dune (Tubi)

    Release date: 2021
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 83%
    Length: 155 minutes
    Director: Denis Villeneuve
Main cast: Timothe Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya

If you do end up watching Apocalypse Now this week, you may recognize several nods to Francis Ford Coppolas war epic in Denis Villeneuves Dune , which is also available to stream for free in October (this time on Tubi).

Part one of Villeneuves two-part (and soon to be three-part) adaptation of Frank Herberts novel series stars Timothe Chalamet as Paul Atreides, a gifted prince whose life is upended when a) he and his family are sent to ward over an unforgiving desert planet, and b) his father (Oscar Isaac) is unceremoniously murdered by the head of a rival house (Stellan Skarsgard). Talk about bad luck! 3) Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (Pluto TV)

    Release date: 2004
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 66%
    Length: 94 minutes
    Director: Adam McKay
Main cast: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell

Moving away from the doom and gloom of the Vietnam War and an apocalyptic vision of interstellar space, Adam McKays exceptional workplace comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is now streaming for free on Pluto TV.

This satirical take on the culture of the 1970s centers on a chauvinistic
news anchor (Will Ferrell) whose confidence and popularity are upended when
an ambitious female reporter (Christina Applegate) joins the team. Anchorman also stars Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, and Ben Stiller, which reads like an all-star comedy lineup in 2025. 4) Spider-Man (Pluto TV)

    Release date: 2002
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%
    Length: 116 minutes
    Director: Sam Raimi
Main cast: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe, James Franco

The one that started it all: Sam Raimis genre-inspiring superhero movie, Spider-Man , is streaming for free on Pluto TV this month.

You already know the plot: a shy-but-smart New York City student, Peter
Parker (Tobey Maguire), is bitten by a genetically modified spider, which turns him into a web-slinging crime-stopper. But Raimis 2002 movie is also worth a re-watch for its masterful pacing, great cinematography, and oddly charming early 2000s vibe. Incidentally, the other two movies in the Spider-Man trilogy are also available on Pluto TV throughout October. 5) Life (Samsung TV Plus)

    Release date: 2017
    Rotten Tomatoes score: 67%
    Length: 104 minutes
    Director: Daniel Espinosa
Main cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada

What do you get when you lock Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds in the International Space Station (ISS) with a man-eating extraterrestrial organism? Well, the answer can be found in Life , which is available to stream for free to owners of the best Samsung TVs this month.

This tightly paced sci-fi adventure follows a six-member crew aboard the ISS as they receive the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. Soon, though, this shape-shifting creature which the astronauts nickname 'Calvin' turns out to be about as friendly as any reasonable person would expect a shape-shifting creature from outer space to be (read: not very friendly).
