The theme board certified confused me today: PLANE, LATHE, DRILL were these acronyms for organizations with boards? What are you doing to me, Strands?

It all became clear once the Spangram snake appeared. My mind wandered back
to my dim and distant schooldays, the smell of sawdust in the air as I used a JIGSAW and a CHISEL to fashion a magnificent butt joint as I toiled away creating a spectacularly ugly spice rack that was given pride of place in my family kitchen until it fell apart two days later under the weight of a single jar of turmeric powder. I was about as good back then at WOODWORKING
as I am at Strands now.

Congratulations if you managed to spot BALLERINA today. I was staring at Strands for ages until I got it. It was one of those words where I tried
words I knew were not words, like ERINABALL and NABALLERI.

This was one where even though you understood the theme immediately, the
words were still unexpected. Spinning is not the first thing youd think of a FOOTBALL doing, is it?

All this reminds me of the time we got these new expensive revolving chairs
in the office. Everyone hated them at first and thought they were ugly and pointless, but in the end, we all came round.

My mother would always put a piece of COAL neatly wrapped up of course in our Christmas STOCKING, a tradition she continued into my adult life.

I always thought that it was intended as a reminder of the real meaning of Christmas amid the ramped-up consumerism, ridiculously raised expectations
and over sentimentality. But then she told me the real reason she thought it was funny.

I also liked my Grandfathers tradition of re-gifting the present Id bought
him the previous year back to me. The first couple of times I thought it was an error three Old Spice gift sets in and I knew it was deliberate.

Todays Strands was surprisingly tricky and it took me ages to work out that the final letters I had left spelled out PLUSHIE.

Its around this time of year that the pets are not just for Christmas message is commonplace, reminding people of the commitment and responsibility of keeping animals. But theres another phrase thats equally apposite a gym is not just for January.

January is the gym owners' favorite time of year. The month when everyones
New Year Resolutions compel them towards their local establishing like lemmings to a cliff as they finally commit to get fit. But then, after a couple of visits in the first few weeks of the year, the visits and
enthusiasm fades and people forget that they have a payment committment for the rest of the year. Its a magical formula that means gyms can have
thousands more members than they could ever accommodate.

Not that you need a gym to start doing the EXERCISEs outlined in todays
puzzle all of which can be completed in a living room although I would advise avoiding the BURPEE, as that will put you off exercise for life and could result in tragedy if you have a ceiling fan. On second thoughts, join that gym.

In a previous career I had to interview people about their kitchens. It was usually celebrities, who would be offered a discount on a swanky new ISLAND, SPLASHBACK, etc and in return they had to talk about their KITCHEN REMODEL to a nobody from a homes magazine.

It was a terrible situation. I had zero interest in kitchens, they had zero interest in talking about kitchens, but they had made a pact and somehow we got through it. After exhausting every possible angle on what they liked
about their new kitchens we would go on to topics that I hoped would inject some color into the finished article a humorous anecdote about burnt meal, a weird smell it took years to identify, a leaky tap, anything but after a while I gave up.

Fortunately nobody really cared about the words in these articles, it was all about the photos which always made them look like how kitchens in heaven would look: perfect, gleaming and untouched by anyone interested in doing
some cooking.

Thar she blows! sounds like a great thing to holler, but in truth unless
youre a lumberjack or in charge of triggering the dynamite for a demolition company how often in life do you get to shout it?

Maybe thats why people like shouting it at less than timmmmmber-worthy
moments like during a game of Jenga, or when someone drops a couple of
plates in a far-off restaurant kitchen, or when your cousin blows their nose. And why is it she? Can only female denoted things blow? Are trees, chimneys and tall buildings all ladies? Did they have any say in identifying as Mrs Tree? Anyway, I digress. Apologies. Strands wasnt about that at all it was about WHALES and their magnificent blowholes.

ORCA was the key to unlocking todays theme, with BALEEN coming last for me.

The answers to today's Strands, game #325, are BRAVE CARS SOUL ONWARD ELEMENTAL RATATOUILLE SPANGRAM: ANIMATION My rating: Easy My score: 1 hint

Even though I could see that this Pixar-themed puzzle included RATATOUILLE, I still had to leave it until last and even then struggled to connect the letters in the right order. What a tricky word to spell.

Sadly, Strands didnt include my favorite Pixar movie WALL-E no doubt for punctuation reasons. Same for the magnificent MONSTERS, INC.

Whenever I catch myself taking life too easy, watching soccer in a reclined position with a bag of chips on my lap, I often snap out of my drooling
stupor by thinking about WALL-E and the spacecraft full of fitless humans who have forgotten how to fend for themselves. Admittedly, this is most days.

Maybe I should buy a treadmill for my sports TV viewing. Itd make it harder
to eat the chips, at least.

Another super-long Spangram snake so long that even though Id got all of the main words I still struggled to identify it.

This was one of those Strands puzzles where nothing made sense until it was done. When I saw the clue, and the first two words I got were SOCK and GLOVE, I initially thought we were looking for words connected with boxing.

It wasnt until I sighted MARIONETTE definitely no boxing connection there that reality slowly began to dawn and hazy memories of Sesame Street surfaced in my minds eye.
