As the father of teenage daughters I am well aware of all of the OFFICESUPPLIES in today's Strands. Not because they work in an office, obviously, but because they are at school and seem to get through about 20 RULERs and 50 PENCILS a year, constantly need me to help them use the PRINTER and still seem a little clueless about how to use SCISSORS or a STAPLER. Kids today, eh? Too much time spent in front of a screen, clearly.

My own parental issues aside, this was an easy Strands puzzle to solve. The theme clue provided a good push in the right direction, and when I found PRINTER by accident my course was duly charted. None of the words were had to think of, and only the rather long and complex spangram provided any real challenge.

The answers to today's Strands, game #251, are BLUR OASIS PAVEMENT TOOL NIRVANA SUBLIME SPANGRAM: NINETIESBANDS My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

I have slightly mixed feelings about this Strands puzzle. On the one hand,
the subject is NINETIESBANDS, and in many ways that's my specialist subject. I'm a huge music fan (and former music journalist) and the '90s was my era. Two of the bands in today's list, PAVEMENT and BLUR, are among my favorites ever, and I have a soft spot for NIRVANA too.

On the flip side, what on earth does 'Generation jam', the theme clue, refer to? I have no idea whatsoever. And setting that aside, this may prove very difficult for people who are either too young or too old to be familiar with the likes of TOOL and SUBLIME, who aren't necessarily household names (or aren't these days, at least). Still, rather this than yesterday's silly emoji-based game.

This is a relatively mundane edition of Strands, but there's nothing wrong with that. It all makes sense which isn't always the case! and offers a reasonable challenge unless you get lucky with your first word. That's
because the theme hint, '"Oh, you!"', is rather cryptic; you may well need to use a hint to get going. I didn't, because I found DROLL by accident when looking for hint words, and then spotted LAUGHABLE by design, based on what I thought the concept here might be. I was correct, and followed up with the likes of AMUSING and WITTY before getting the spangram. Business as usual, really.

I always thought it would be fun to be a SOUNDEFFECTS engineer. Imagine working on Batman in the 1960s and coming up with all of the noises made during the fight scenes it would have been hilarious. Or maybe that's just me. And now I'm wondering if on my next call with the TechRadar team I should introduce the odd CRASH or HONK when someone says something particularly interesting/stupid.

Anyway, this was a reasonably good Strands game, as they go, and certainly a lot more worthy of your time (and mine) than yesterday's pointless exercise. It's still pretty simple, though; will there ever be a Strands game that I'll need to use my brain for? Will I ever lose one? Time will tell, but my suspicion is that no, the NYT likes Strands to be the simple counterpart to the far more difficult likes of Connections, Spelling Bee and indeed Wordle.

Honestly, this one completely baffled me. I've been asking the NYT puzzle setters to make Strands harder for ages, so I'm not complaining when I get a difficult one but I simply did not make the connection between these words
at all until after I'd uncovered the spangram, which was at the very end of
my game.

I'm blaming the theme clue here of Yas! Queen, mainly because it meant
nothing at all to me. I am old and out of touch and didn't even know this was a phrase, so I was completely thrown by it. Obviously the Queen aspect should have given it away, but no. To add to that, the answers here are all common words, and I didn't put them together mentally to be the lyrics to BOHEMIANRHAPSODY. All my fault, no complaints.
