Strands is the NYT's latest word game after the likes of Wordle, Spelling Bee and Connections and it's great fun. It can be difficult, though, so read on for my Strands hints.

The answers to today's Strands, game #216, are SHAM FAKE QUACK PHONY HOAK CHARLATAN HUMBUG SPANGRAM: THATSUNREAL My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

After yesterday's annoying Strands puzzle, today's is much better. It's hard, though the theme of THATSUNREAL is a tricky one to identify, and you'll probably have needed to get a couple of answers by accident, or to have used hints, to get started.

That's what happened to me; I found SHAM and FAKE while searching for hint words, and together with the theme clue of 'No way!' that was enough information for me to work with. Not that thinking of more words was easy; I got the likes of QUACK and PHONY through a mixture of luck and inspiration, but needed to hunt for quite some time.

now out of beta so is a fully fledged member of the NYT's games stable and
can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

The answers to today's Strands, game #223, are PORKY BUGS GRANNY DAFFY FOXY FOGHORN PETUNIA SPANGRAM: CHARACTERS My rating: Moderate My score: 2 hints

I have mixed feelings about this Strands puzzle. On the plus side, I loved Looney Tunes as a kid, and revelled in the antics of PORKY, DAFFY, BUGS Bunny and the others. On the minus side, the NYT puzzle setters couldn't find space for the best characters in the gang, Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. But as far as this puzzle goes, my main problem is that the spangram is
CHARACTERS which they all are, yes, but shouldn't it be more specific than that?

That aside, this was undoubtedly a difficult game. It's some 40 years since I was regularly watching these cartoons, and they weren't a big thing when my kids were young (it was all Peppa Pig, Frozen and Dora by then). I found
some, but needed hints for FOXY (who I didn't remember) and FOGHORN. A mixed bag, then, but overall I'll give it a thumbs up. And for today at least, that's all folks.

The answers to today's Strands, game #230, are ZING KICK SPARK PIZZAZZ FIZZ OOMPH VERVE SPANGRAM: EXTRASOMETHING My rating: Moderate My score: 1 hint

Look at all those Zs! Seven of them in total, including four in PIZZAZZ
alone. These did help me to get started, though, because Z doesn't go with many other letters (vowels, basically), which made it easier to find ZING. Plus ZZ is an obvious combination and it was fairly easy to also find FIZZ
and the aforementioned PIZZAZZ. I stumbled upon KICK and SPARK by accident
and by that point had so much of the board uncovered that it felt like completing it would be a simple task.

But no. I stalled at that stage and needed a hint to unlock OOMPH. That did the trick, and when I finally spotted the spangram, EXTRASOMETHING, victory was only a guess away.

The answers to today's Strands, game #237, are ARIA BALLAD SHANTY JINGLE LULLABY SPIRITUAL SPANGRAM: VOCALMUSIC My rating: Moderate My score: 2 hints

I was mildly concerned when I uncovered ARIA as the first answer today. It
was sitting prominently in the top-left corner of the board, and given that the theme clue was 'Sing-song' it seemed likely to be a solution. And it was. However, all I know about ARIAs is that they are an opera thing and I know about as much about opera as I do about brain surgery. Probably less,
    frankly.

Fortunately, this wasn't a Strands puzzle all about opera, but rather one about VOCALMUSIC. Establishing that fact was not too tricky, because I
spotted the MUSIC part of the spangram on account of the SIC part being right in the middle height-wise and on the edge of the board, which led me to the full phrase. I then got BALLAD and SHANTY easily enough because they were squashed in below the spangram. so far, so good.

Only then I stalled. I couldn't think of any other types of VOCALMUSIC and needed to use hints for JINGLE and LULLABY. I added SPIRITUAL by default, but was rather disappointed I hadn't done better here.
