The answers to today's Strands, game #154, are RING MIDDLE PALM PINKY THUMB CUTICLE NAIL POINTER SPANGRAM: ONHAND My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

This is another easy Strands, made simpler still by the theme clue giving the game away before you'd even started. After all, 'In glove' can't really refer to anything other than the hand and if, like me, you found RING or MIDDLE or PALM early on, you'll have had that theme confirmed right away.

I doubt the whole thing took me more than about three minutes, and only CUTICLE caused me any trouble, purely because for some reason I needed a couple of attempts to spell it!

I really, really struggled with today's Strands. I struggled to get started, and needed a hint to find the first word. That was DECK, and I struggled then to see the relationship to the theme clue, 'Home stretch?', and so needed another hint. That gave me PATIO, at which point I realized what I needed to do. However, I then struggled to think of or find any other words. Eventually I needed hints for BALCONY and SUNROOM, and by that stage there were very few words that could still be formed, so I did manage to find the others. Even so, the spangram, BONUSSPACES, still took me an age to uncover. Not a good day.

The answers to today's Strands, game #168, are PAINT BRUSH CANVAS MOLD EASEL PALETTE CHARCOAL SPANGRAM: ARTCLASS My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

Art is not my thing. I can appreciate it, sure, but ask me to actually draw
or paint something and, well, you'd be better off asking my dog. I am terrible. As a result, this art-themed Strands puzzle from the NYT probably caused me more problems than it might otherwise have done.

There's nothing truly difficult about it, and I worked out what the theme was relatively early on (after finding PAINT and BRUSH by accident). However, I simply couldn't think of things that an artist would need beyond those two things. CANVAS was, admittedly, an easy one that I eventually spotted, but
the likes of EASEL and PALETTE took me ages to find. Still, no complaints
from me it's good to get the brain working and I solved it in the end.

It must be a difficult job getting the balance right in Strands, but it's
fair to say that the difficulty level can swerve all over the place. The
theme clue is one of the key reasons for that sometimes it's cryptic, sometimes a lot more straightforward. Today's, 'Into the woods', leaves very little room for confusion as to what is needed, and once you found one of the easier answers PINE, WILLOW or BEECH, for instance, you'll have had that suspicion confirmed. After that it will just have been a case of ticking them off one by one, which is what I was able to do here with little fuss.
