Happy 4th of July, everyone! I don't celebrate it myself, because I'm in the UK. No, I'm not still sore that we lost the war of independence, it's just
not a thing here. That might have made the game a little harder, but frankly the NYT made it very easy for everyone today.

For one, the spangram is INDEPENDENCE DAY, which takes up a whopping 15 out
of the 48 letters on the board. That only left space for five standard answers, and one of them, FIREWORKS, was very easy to find and used another nine.

Secondly, the answers here are not specific to a US celebration the likes of PARADE and FLAG and SPARKLERs are mainstays of national days everywhere, so picking them off one by one was really not a challenge.

A baked potato is objectively one of the best mini-meals in existence, so I enjoyed this Strands puzzle from the NYT. Not that I realized what the connection here was until relatively late on in the game; I'd already found BUTTER, CHILI, BACON and CHIVES before getting the spangram, and at that
point all I knew was that clearly there was some kind of food thing going on here.

Once I got the spangram, BAKEDPOTATO, it all became a lot easier, with only
my inability to spell BROCCOLI (it always trips me up) causing me any problems.

One of the more difficult aspects of Strands is wracking your brain for words that could fit the theme, even when you've worked out what it is. But that's not needed today, because the answers are right in front of you! Or at least they are if you're playing on a laptop or desktop computer. I suspect most people are using their phone, where the keys will be less obvious. But even so, the keyboard is a familiar thing to most people, so I doubt anyone will find this too tricky.

I'm not a jazz guy. I've tried, but it's just never happened for me. And that made today's Strands pretty darn tough.

Seriously, I needed three hints to solve it and even then had to spend a
chunk of time trying permutations of letters in order to find the last
couple. I have heard of most of these SUBGENRES, as the spangram would have it, but not MODAL or COOL, and I didn't know that BEBOP or RAGTIME were jazz as such.

I'd also take some issues with the spangram, which doesn't seem in any way specific to jazz; there are subgenres in almost all types of music, so why is it the spangram here?
