Another day, another chance to solve the NYT's fiendishly difficult new word game Strands. OK, maybe 'fiendishly difficult' is an exaggeration but it definitely can be tough. If you're a little stumped by today's game you can scroll down for some hopefully helpful hints to get you going.

The answers to today's Strands, game #60, are CLOWNFISH SKUNK CHIPMUNK TIGER BUMBLEBEE ZEBRA SPANGRAM: STRIPED My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

I blame myself (a little) for my difficulty in solving today's Strands
puzzle. The clue What's my line? is quite obtuse, admittedly, but when I found CLOWNFISH early on I should have put two and two together. Instead and please go easy on me, I was feeling a little tired when I played I got hung up on thinking it was a reference to Finding Nemo . I know, I know but it seemed to fit at the time.

My task wasn't helped by finding SKUNK and then CHIPMUNK next, because I wouldn't associate either of those with being striped. In fact, they further convinced me that this was something about animated animals. What a fool.

It was only when I uncovered TIGER and BUMBLEBEE still purely by chance at this stage that things became clearer. I had revealed so much of the board
by now that I could hardly fail to miss STRIPED, and the other answers followed soon after.

The answers to today's Strands, game #67, are TUNNEL WATERFALL BOULDER RAMP CASTLE WINDMILL SPANGRAM: MINIGOLF My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

This one was all about solving the spangram. Without it, it was really difficult; with it, much, much easier. The theme clue made sense once you
knew that the answer was MINIGOLF, but was obtuse enough that it didn't entirely give the game away. I blundered around without knowing what was
going on for a while, picking up TUNNEL and WATERFALL because they were easy to spot on the board, but having no idea of what the others could be.

I toyed with it being something to do with rivers, or landscapes, but
couldn't make the clue work properly with them, and it was only when I added BOULDER, also by accident, that MINIGOLF became apparent. After that the others were easy pickings.

I hated Tuesday's Strands puzzle (the one about charcuterie), but despite covering a similar food-based topic, this one was much more satisfying not least because it makes sense! The only trouble with it is that similar to yesterday's (see below) it's arguably too easy.

I found BITTER, SALTY, SWEET and SOUR swiftly, based on the theme clue and on all four being rather simple words. UMAMI was a little harder because I couldn't remember how it was spelled, but once I had the spangram I ticked that one off too. The remaining answers followed quickly afterwards.

The NYT's Strands word game is still in beta, which means its status as a bonafide member of the publisher's Games site, alongside the likes of Wordle and Connections, is yet to be confirmed. I hope it does get full status, because it's really good fun: taxing without being impossible, and offering a slightly different challenge from day to day.

I found today's to be a pretty tough one, and if you do too then you'll find some helpful hints below.

Cultural differences might well have come into play here; I'm based in the
UK, and had never heard of three of the five PARTYGAMES listed as answers, with only CHARADES and TWISTER being among the entertainment options back
when I was a kid. Equally, it might be an age thing; maybe the likes of CELEBRITY and TELEPHONE have only become popular in recent years.

Either way, I struggled with this one, even once I found the spangram. That
in itself proved difficult. I'd uncovered MAFIA by accident, and could see
the word 'games' too. But when I played that, it didn't turn blue (or
yellow), so I dismissed it.

It was only when I spotted TWISTER also by accident that I realized what
the concept was, and returned to find PARTYGAMES. Coming up with CHARADES was easy, but the others required a certain amount of trial and error before I eventually found them all.

The answers to today's Strands, game #88, are CHUNKY BLOCK CONE KITTEN CUBAN WEDGE STILETTO SPANGRAM: HIGHHEELS My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

The fact that I solved this Strands puzzle in only a couple of minutes, despite not really knowing much about the subject (and that's an understatement), proves just how easy it is. Several of the answers were laid out nicely along the edges of the board, and stood out quickly based purely
on letter combinations: WEDGE, CHUNKY and BLOCK were all simple to solve in that manner.

That said, I had no idea what united those words. Uncovering CONE confused me even more. It was only when I spotted KITTEN and then CUBAN that the
lightbulb went off in my head, and the others followed soon afterwards.
