This is exactly the content I was looking for. I was thinking how can I make my local bike trail system into ascii to put on the cycling message base of my BBS and you may have just found me an answer to that
question!
Wow, ok I'm glad someone could use it. Somewhat unexpected but great!

They use map data from openstreetmap. The OP and respondents to the
thread said you have to use real telnet to get in there. Supposedly it's not pure ascii because they use colors and braille unicode. You can move around using vi keys. It's dope enjoy.

It took a while to find though - since there aren't any street labels.
It's strangely rewarding to me to see other people who love to play with maps.
I forget that not everyone pours over aerial photography all day. I guess being a draftsman working in civil engineering has shaped me a little more than I thought!
I'm obsessed with maps. To the point that I avoid Google Maps sometimes because I know I'm going to get lost. Sat imagery is also a problem.. its worse.. I can go for hours on Sat imagery. Especially if I'm
hunting a place down.

i had a friend who was quite amazed by the paper city maps i have in my car.. for example the little index for looking up street names with the "column" and "row' to find them on the map.. and then the blown up
section of downtown. seems like another thing they might not teach in school anymore ..

I have maps on my walls. Thats how much I love maps.
plane in St Louis last year because I got staring at a state map on the wall. It had a huge legend... OMG. legends... remember legends...
you don't really see them on Google Maps.. they just kinda assume you know or they just label it on mouse over.. but the little itch it
would scratch in your head to see a line that you didn't know, you look
at the legend and poof you knew. Not quicker.. just satisfying.

Being a airman makes me a bit of a map nerd. And a weather nerd. Bunch
of other things I won't mention.

I had a rather detailed military type map covering a wall when I lived
in West Germany, and would put a dot on each small town I visited,
usually doing a Volksmarch.
