    Folks -

Thought I'd share this tidbit in a thread I saw on usenet.

A telnet server with an interactive world map:

    telnet mapscii.me

They use map data from openstreetmap. The OP and respondents to the thread said you have to use real telnet to get in there. Supposedly it's not pure ascii because they use colors and braille unicode. You can move around using vi keys. It's dope enjoy.

Head over to alt.ascii-art if you have time.

This is exactly the content I was looking for. I was thinking how can I make my local bike trail system into ascii to put on the cycling message base of my BBS and you may have just found me an answer to that question!

    Thanks for the share!

So, a little background. I'm a CAD draftsman who works in civil engineering and have been an engineering tech and survey tech for the last 20 years so maps are very much my thing!

Thanks again for the post, very fun.

I just tried it for the first time. Zoomed in right to my street - amazing.

It took a while to find though - since there aren't any street labels.

I'm obsessed with maps. To the point that I avoid Google Maps sometimes because I know I'm going to get lost. Sat imagery is also a problem.. its worse.. I can go for hours on Sat imagery. Especially if I'm hunting a place down.

i had a friend who was quite amazed by the paper city maps i have in my car.. for example the little index for looking up street names with the "column" and "row' to find them on the map.. and then the blown up section of downtown. seems like another thing they might not teach in school anymore ..

i have one for each of the nearby cities plus the state one.. don't really need them, but then again if i take them out of the car, i'll end up with a dead phone off somewhere i'm unfamiliar with and then i'll regret taking them out :)

I've long since abandoned paper but I grew up with it as well. I remember going on family road trips and getting in trouble for stealing the map book because I was pouring over it. My kid looks at me like an idiot when I talk about paper maps. All they know is GPS..

I have maps on my walls. Thats how much I love maps.

In college, friends of mine moved into an old victorian flat in San
Francisco - back then, most of the rentals in central SF were old
victorian flats in various states of repair.

They had a housewarming party and asked people to bring maps. I didn't
understand, until I came back the week afterwards and they'd covered
all of the dingy, stained walls in the living room with maps,
    interwoven. It looked very cool.

    In retrospect, nowadays, in a rent-controlled world, I'd buy a 5 gallon
can of satin white paint, rent a carpet shampooer, and DIY - and not
tell the landlord. I knew so many people who made waves waiting for
landlords to clean places, when picking up and finding a new place was
always more expensive. Better and cheaper to make your space
comfortable and eat the cost, I'd think now.

Not to mention the fact that when you do move, it's sometimes a
struggle to get your security deposit back. Showing the place looking
better than when you move in and having the landlord try to deduct
    repairs/cleaning would be entertaining!

Yeah, I grew up flying in sailplanes. Did some power training but ended up a commercial drone license.
Funny though, the wife and I have made no cell phone trips where we had to use paper maps. Good maps are harder to find these days than you think! And we have a NY map that's before all the current interstates were finished so we've taken pre-interstate trips too.
