    Lolz, Doob.

I totally understood all of what you just said. I've been using Linux in one form or another (almost exclusively for server-stuff - I still use Windows for my daily driver) since the late 90s.

I do have a Linux Mint laptop that I have loaded and ready-to-go for those situations where I need linux to accomplish a particular goal (liek reading EXT* filesystems) but my daily driver is also my gaming PC, so....Windows..

Yes, I know that gaming on Linux is a thing, but it's just not really totally there yet. Just check out the Linus Tech Tips series on that topic... They had to go to pains to get it working -- and that's not something I really want to put that much time into - when I want to game, I don't want to futz with it.

So, I have my Win10 laptop and my Mint laptop -- use the right tool for the right job I always say...

I'm pretty much the same, Windows on T3H_B33ST, and Linux on T3H_M0B1L3. Also, by default, Linux on my Raspberry Pis. I don't really use my laptop much, but I do like to mess around in Linux on occasion, just to see the different ways it works. Not to mention that some of my various projects are primarily Linux-base, and my eventual game doors will need both Windows and Linux (and armhf/Pi) builds.

Yes, I know that gaming on Linux is a thing, but it's just not really totally there yet. Just check out the Linus Tech Tips series on that topic...

I'm a Canadian computer guy. You can be assured that I've already subscribed to LTT. I was subscribed when he was still a kid in a computer warehouse. The Legend of Linus Sebastian is well-known to me! (o_-)

Yeah, for gaming, nothing beats Windows. And there's a reason for that. Microsoft hands out a *LOT* of money to game devs, partly to ensure that Windows gets priority. Apple refuses to stoop to that level, and Linux literally *can't*...

So, I have my Win10 laptop and my Mint laptop -- use the right tool for the right job I always say...

Okay, wait...you game on a laptop? And then say 'use the right tool for the right job'? Are you suffering from a head injury, sir? (o_O)

That's one of the reasons I bought the laptop. At the time, a discrete GPU was more than I paid for the entire machine!

It's an MSI GL75 Leopard -- 17" 32G ram (up from 16), NVME SSD Boot and (added) 1hard disk, i7-10750H and RTX 2070 (not mobile version, but downclocked for heat).

Paid $1500 + the cost of the RAM and I already had the 1TB HDD. So yeah, quite a good deal at the time. Got it a little over a year ago. Still running great, and it makes my thighs sweat!

    Lolz.

    Good times.

As I alluded to, my laptop is a 'classic'. 'Ye olde' Dell Precision m4500, aka 'Laptop Corvette'. Fine, it only had awesome hardware for its time. Just like yours does right now...for a year, at best. Because 30-series exists. And 40-series is just waiting for better market value...

And this is where towers are better: as time goes on, one can easily (budget permitting) upgrade any aging part, be it CPU, RAM, GPU, cooling, or even motherboard. The same definitely can't be said about laptops.

I *am* pleased with the deal I got. Not nose-rubbing at all. I'm just chuffed about having power available to me if I want it.

Don't get me started on my server/SAN/network stack. Makes the laptop look like a chromebook.

I needed an all-around (and portable) machine, and since I live in a 5th wheel trailer, I don't have the space for a desktop setup, nor do I have the budget!

Besides, for the type of gaming I am interested in, this 2070 will last me a very long time. As it is, I can run anything I want in 1080 at ultra or near-ultra.....

Another reason why towers are better. You get to choose your own power supply!

Bull feces! There are plenty of 'small form factor' towers that are far better than whatever laptop you're using, and at the same price you paid!

Hell, you know who LTT is, why am I explaining this to you?!

Yep. At 1080p, even my ancient 1060 still likes the 'ultra' settings. But you need to remember the age-old jab:

Can it run Crysis? (For me, yes, but Crysis 3 is pretty laggy at 'ultra')

Btw, Crysis 4 is coming soon...

And that's not all that's coming down the gaming 'pipe'...Don't expect any comfort from me, when you're complaining about your hardware next year!

Just a tip, quoting the message you are replying to, even in part really helps.

Gaming on Linux is pretty good. I'm running Windows games under Proton with quite astonishingly pleasant ease. Linux Tech Tips ran into a specific problem with a specific distro, it isn't indicative of gaming on Linux in general and it annoys me a bit how they dwelt on it. But then again, YouTubers generally annoy me.

It still is easier to game under Windows than Linux, but when you get a Linux game with Steam, its pretty much just as if you're using Windows these days for the most part.

Over quoting is almost as bad though. 6Km of quote before you get to any
reply can make it hard to tie the appropriate section of the message to the reply.
