    Hello

So I'm on my fourth for tonight. It's been an interesting day, so yeah, i
got a six pack to settle the nerves.

Probably not the best medicine, but it works ;P

Wife is watching doggies vs tigers on the tv (AFL game - her team is
    doggies).

Looks like my "backup" er "onlyup" drive is starting to fail. It's got
all my documents I've collected over the years. I have about 5tb of
stuff, and can't really afford another 5tb drive to back up the one I
    have, so it's kind of a not-backed-up-backup.

Oh well. I've copied about 2TB off of it, and I have the most important
stuff.. photos, old projects etc. I might be able to find space for the
rest of it over various hard drives, but I'm not sure I really care that
    much.

I'm 40 in may. tomorrow's the 1st, so i have 19 days left of being under
    40. gets one thinking about their own demise a little. I hope to be
remembered as someone who was friendly and approachable. Helpful when
asked. I hope. Maybe it's just the drama of other nets, but I hope others
don't think I'm a complete arse just because i'm painted that way by
    someone in particular.

Sorry that was a little dark I suppose. Probably just put too much stock
    in what others think.

Anyway, I'm going to get another beer and join my wife watching the footy.

    Andrew

Oh man, figure out a way! I've lost stuff like that before and have really regreted it. I'm sure I've mentioned it a million times, but look into unRAID. I just toss my old drives in a unRAID server and have used it for years without issue -- including rebuild/repairs from losing a drive (but without data loss due to parity). That won't help you get another 5TB drive of course, but it means you can throw smaller/older ones and get the same deal.

Always have been man, and happy pre-birthday. I actually forgot how old I was the other day (42), so I guess that isn't a good sign :)

Bugger. I only have 1TB drives here and mostly older too.. Hmmm there's a lesson here somewhere I think. Perhaps I'd better try and find another one

I was younger the other day. Did I enjoy them yeah mostly, would I want to rerun them again. Nah.

Nah, it's ok. I backed up the important stuff the other day, about 2TB,
the rest is just not important.

My documents and projects etc are backed up, but even those, the most
important ones (to me) are on GitLab anyway.

I turned 50 last year. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but something about turning a "milestone" age during a pandemic seems to make
me think more than the others did. Or maybe it is simply because this milestone is 10 years older than the previous. :) You've always been

While I do know what this is in reference to, I don't think you have to worry. I, for one, will always think of you as friendly and approachable. You have helped me quite a few times, on different projects, and I greatly appreciate it.

I know I've mentioned this to you, but you are also one of the reasons I started getting into programming again. After seeing some of the great stuff you have been putting together, I was inspired to jump back in and start programming.

I may not be writing BBS programs, and Linux distros, but I hope to be, even a percentage of the programmer you are.

Keep up the great work, and remember, age is only a number. :)

I've got two motorcycles in the garage right now. Whenever you get on one, if you don't feel a little bit scared or nervous, don't even start it up. When you're a bit scared, you'll pay more attention to what you, and everyone else around you, is doing.

I just don't take them out much anymore, as I've had way too many close calls. A couple years ago, I took the bike to the gas station, which is about a mile and a half down the road from where I live. On the way there, I was almost hit twice. On the way back, there was another close call. People just don't pay attention to motorcycles, even with loud pipes. :)

I don't think people pay attention, end of sentence.

One thing I've noticed lately is people driving with their high beams on, at night and even during the daytime. Some of the new lights are painfully bright, too.

If I see a white contractor's truck, it's almost guaranteed they're running with their high beams on.

I thought it was an oversight, but there's a big blue headlight indicator on every dash board. People must be doing it thinking that annoying or blinding oncoming drivers helps them be a little more visible. Won't make a
difference to the person driving with eyes on their phone.

stopping before they turn right. The one guy didn't even look at me until
I hit my horn and he turned his head, after already pulling half-way into

Luckily, there are briefly two lanes EB there, and the other lane was empty.

That's true. So many people are more interested in updating their facebook status, instead of paying attention to their driving.

One thing I've noticed lately is people driving with their high beams
on, at night and even during the daytime. Some of the new lights are painfully bright, too.

What's almost as bad, are those headlights to vary in brightness. They'll be bright, then dim, etc... When I first saw those, I thought my eyes were messing with me.

I thought it was an oversight, but there's a big blue headlight
indicator on every dash board. People must be doing it thinking that annoying or blinding oncoming drivers helps them be a little more
visible. Won't make a difference to the person driving with eyes on
    their phone.

    So true.

There are people who aren't great drivers and are rusty, combined with speeders who are capitalizing on the lack of traffic to speed. Makes for a
bad combination. 50 in the slow lane, 95 in the fast lane.

I'd read that the Cannonball Run record was broken several times last summer during the lockdown. People do the run one-at-a-time now, It'd be
interesting to see a proper race again.

A recent winner had blocked off taillights and trim to make an AMG mercedes resemble a Honda Accord. Once you looked inside at the array of dash-mounted iPads, the ruse was broken.

I'm trying to think what New Zealand folks are into food wise at the moment. Avocados are always popular as is cheese and fish. We like our Lamb and Beef but seemingly export all the good stuff abroad and what remains is sold at crazy prices to locals. That said supermarkets here are crazy expensive too compared to other parts of the world :(

Oh well. I've copied about 2TB off of it, and I have the most important stuff.. photos, old projects etc. I might be able to find space for the rest of it over various hard drives, but I'm not sure I really care that much.

Might want to take a look at some of the free cloud backups, and copy some to those.

I'm 40 in may. tomorrow's the 1st, so i have 19 days left of being under 40. gets one thinking about their own demise a little. I hope to be remembered as someone who was friendly and approachable. Helpful when asked. I hope. Maybe it's just the drama of other nets, but I hope others don't think I'm a complete arse just because i'm painted that way by someone in particular.

I just turned 50 last week. You're still young. ;)

Yeah I saw that, happy birthday :)

Not worried so much about getting older, just the milestone I suppose
made me stop to think about things. My little sister came off her
motorbike on the weekend, nothing serious, but kind of made me pause
because it could very easily have been much worse. I do worry about her
on the motorbike, but she loves it, and if you're too afraid to do the
things you love, what's the point? Still, gets me thinking about
    mortality again.

Anyway, that's all a bit of a downer, so will stop with that talk.

Looks like my "backup" er "onlyup" drive is starting to fail. It's got
all my documents I've collected over the years. I have about 5tb of
stuff, and can't really afford another 5tb drive to back up the one I have, so it's kind of a not-backed-up-backup.

I sorted through one of those huge directories full o' stuff and sorted it into "could find on the net if I needed to" and "irreplaceable". Turned out the latter was a much smaller, manageable amount.

I have a Microsoft 365 subscription that serves as a dumping ground for the former.

My hair started turning gray in my late 30's and by my early 40's it was.. uhh.. gray!

I am quite lucky though, most men in my family lose their hair by 50 but I still have mine.. gray as it is..

I don't know if maybe it is because I have not been driving nearly as much
over the past year, but it seems to me like people have gotten worse since
the pandemic started. I have had a couple of people pull out RIGHT in
front of me at lights where I have the right-of-way and they should be
stopping before they turn right. The one guy didn't even look at me until
I hit my horn and he turned his head, after already pulling half-way into
    my lane.

Luckily, there are briefly two lanes EB there, and the other lane was empty.

I have not been driving when it is dark at all lately, so I have not
    noticed the high-beams much.

There are people who aren't great drivers and are rusty, combined with speeders who are capitalizing on the lack of traffic to speed. Makes for a
bad combination. 50 in the slow lane, 95 in the fast lane.

I'd read that the Cannonball Run record was broken several times last summer during the lockdown. People do the run one-at-a-time now, It'd be
interesting to see a proper race again.

A recent winner had blocked off taillights and trim to make an AMG mercedes resemble a Honda Accord. Once you looked inside at the array of dash-mounted iPads, the ruse was broken.
