• Rigel Engine; Duke Nukem 2

    So I'm sure many other watch LGR Blerbs, but if you don't I wanna point out a really cool project;

Rigel Engine is a re-implementation of the game Duke Nukem II, originally released by Apogee Software in 1993 for MS-DOS. RigelEngine works as a drop-in replacement for the original executable: It reads the game's data files and plays just like the original, but runs natively on modern operating systems and is written in modern C++ code with a completely new architecture under the hood. On top of that, it offers various modern enhancements like better game controller support, a wide-screen mode, quick saving etc.

Long story short, you use your copy of Duke Nukem 2 data files and you can run it on current hardware under your OS of choice - it allows for wide-screen Duke Nukem gameplay and runs really nicely; I'm both using it and adding it to my retro-OS project I'm working on... its a completely new way of playing DN2, and I hope that the Engine continues to get updates and possibly even support more old DOS games data files.

In wide-screen mode, you get about 30% more of the screen towards the right, which kinda makes Duke Nukem 2 a little easier to play - you get to see more baddies and know whats coming. Haveing played this game at great length under DOS, this is a very welcome project that I think you should take out for a test drive.

You can download it at the github:
    https://github.com/lethal-guitar/RigelEngine

You can find SHAREWARE Duke Nukem 2 Files here: https://archive.org/details/msdos_DUKE2_shareware

And I'm sure you could find the full version if you know how to use Duckduckgo... or, if you own the full version or SHAREWARE version from back in the day, its a drop-in... this project uses the exact data files from Duke Nukem 2.

    Cheers!!

    That's cool!

Those games bring back lots of memories...

Thinking of "building" a retro "PC" with a Raspberry Pi 400 + Dosbian (https://cmaiolino.wordpress.com/dosbian/) sometime in the future, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Currently picking up a couple of brand new (NOS) modems for future needs instead. =)

Got a ZyXEL U-336S from Russia and a Microcom DeskPorte FAST+ from the US yesterday and waiting for a Microcom DeskPorte FAST (without the +) today. Brand new (NOS) and really nice prices, but of course S&H and customs add up some...

    Best regards
    Zip

Projects like this are popping up like mushrooms after Autumn rain. Which is way cool.

Not long ago I learnt of a source port of Diablo 1. It works on BSD and everything. How cool is that?

Serious source ports usually try not to introduce changes that modify the gameplay of old titles by default, so their choice for adding extra screen space is extrange. Ports of old games give you the closest experience to the original as possible and then give you knobs you can adjust to deviate from it.

Yes, it works on Linux. I beat the game playing a Rogue last month, and yesterday I beat the game + the Hellfire expansion with a Monk.

You need the original game assets though.
