Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 July 28 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/hQFEHH5E69s?rel=0 Sun Dance Video Credit: [3]NASA, [4]SDO; Processing: Alan Watson via [5]Helioviewer Explanation: Sometimes, the surface of our Sun seems to dance. In the middle of 2012, for example, NASA's Sun-orbiting [6]Solar Dynamic Observatory spacecraft imaged an [7]impressive prominence that seemed to perform a [8]running dive roll like an acrobatic dancer. The dramatic explosion was [9]captured in [10]ultraviolet light in the [11]featured time-lapse video covering about three hours. A looping [12]magnetic field directed the flow of hot [13]plasma on the [14]Sun. The scale of the [15]dancing prominence is huge -- the entire [16]Earth would easily fit under the flowing [17]arch of hot gas. A quiescent [18]prominence typically lasts about a month and may erupt in a [19]Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), [20]expelling hot gas into the [21]Solar System. The energy mechanism that creates a [22]solar prominence is still a topic of [23]research. Like in 2012, this year the Sun's surface is again [24]quite active and features many [25]filaments and prominences.
