Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 May 6 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/28gtfSziCgU?rel=0 A Total Solar Eclipse from Sliver to Ring Video Credit & Copyright: [3]Reinhold Wittich; Music: Sunrise from [4]Also sprach Zarathusra ([5]R. Strauss) by [6]Sascha Ende Explanation: This is how the Sun disappeared from the daytime sky last month. The [7]featured time-lapse video was created from stills taken from [8]Mountain View, [9]Arkansas, [10]USA on 2024 April 8. First, a small sliver of a normally [11]spotted Sun went strangely dark. Within a few minutes, much of the background [12]Sun was hidden behind the advancing foreground [13]Moon. Within an hour, the only rays from the Sun [14]passing the Moon appeared like a [15]diamond ring. During totality, most of the [16]surrounding sky went dark, making the bright [17]pink prominences around the Sun's edge stand out, and making the [18]amazing corona appear to spread into the surrounding sky. The central view of the [19]corona shows an accumulation of frames taken during complete totality. As the video ends, just a few minutes later, [20]another diamond ring appeared -- this time on the [21]other side of the Moon. Within the next hour, the sky [22]returned to normal.
