Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 April 28 [2]In the center is a colorful nebula, the most usually seen part of the Ring Nebula. Several layers of red-glowing gas with different structures are seen surrounding this center. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. The easily visible [8]central ring is about one [9]light-year across, but [10]this remarkably deep exposure - a [11]collaborative effort combining data from three different large telescopes - [12]explores the looping filaments of glowing gas extending much farther from [13]the nebula's central star. This [14]composite image includes red light emitted by hydrogen as well as visible and [15]infrared light. The Ring Nebula is an elongated [16]planetary nebula, a type of nebula created when a [17]Sun-like star evolves to [18]throw off its outer atmosphere and become a [19]white dwarf star. The [20]Ring Nebula is about 2,500 light-years away toward the musical [21]constellation Lyra. Your Sky Surprise: [22]What picture did APOD feature on your birthday?
