Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 September 17 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/ImVl_TfTFEY?rel=0 Video: Flash on Jupiter Video Credit & Copyright: [3]T. Humbert, S. Barré, A. Desmougin & D. Walliang ([4]Société Lorraine d'Astronomie), [5]Astroqueyras Explanation: There has been a flash on Jupiter. A few days ago, several groups monitoring our Solar System's [6]largest planet noticed a two-second long burst of light. [7]Such flashes have been [8]seen before, with the most famous being a series of [9]impactor strikes in 1994. Then, fragments of [10]Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 struck [11]Jupiter leaving dark patches that lasted for months. Since then, at least [12]seven impacts have been recorded on Jupiter -- usually discovered by [13]amateur astronomers. In the [14]featured video, variations in the Earth's atmosphere cause Jupiter's image to [15]shimmer when, suddenly, a bright flash appears just left of center. Io and its shadow [16]are visible on the right. What hit [17]Jupiter will likely [18]never be known, but considering what we do know of the nearby [19]Solar System, it was likely a piece of rocky and ice -- perhaps the size of a bus -- that [20]broke off long-ago from a passing [21]comet or [22]asteroid.
