Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 June 16 [2]See Explanation. Moving the cursor over the image will bring up an annotated version. Clicking on the image will bring up the highest resolution version available. Scorpius Enhanced Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Stefan Lenz Explanation: If Scorpius looked this good to the unaided eye, humans might remember it better. [4]Scorpius more typically appears as a few bright stars in a well-known but rarely pointed out [5]zodiacal [6]constellation. To get a spectacular image like this, though, one needs a good [7]camera, a [8]dark sky, and some sophisticated [9]image processing. The resulting digitally-enhanced image shows many [10]breathtaking features. Diagonal across the image right is part of the [11]plane of our [12]Milky Way Galaxy. Visible there are vast clouds of bright stars and long filaments of dark and intricate [13]dust. Rising vertically on the image left are dark dust bands known as the [14]Dark River. Several of the [15]bright stars on the left are part of [16]Scorpius' head and claws, and include the bright star [17]Antares. Numerous red [18]emission nebulas, blue [19]reflection nebulas, and dark filaments became visible as the deep 17-hour expo image developed. [20]Scorpius appears prominently in southern skies after sunset during the middle of the year.
