Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 June 5 [2]A red landscape filled with rocks is shown. A hilltop is visible in the distance. A shadow is visible on the landscape. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Then you might be the [10]Perseverance rover exploring [11]Mars. Perseverance has been examining the Red Planet since 2021, [12]finding evidence of its complex [13]history of volcanism and [14]ancient flowing water, and sending [15]breathtaking images across the inner [16]Solar System. [17]Pictured here in February of 2024, [18]Perseverance looks opposite the Sun and across Neretva Vallis in [19]Jezero Crater, with a [20]local hill visible at the top of the frame. The distinctively non-human shadow of the [21]car-sized rover is visible below center, superposed on [22]scattered rocks. Perseverance, now working [23]without its flying companion [24]Ingenuity, continues [25]to search Mars for [26]signs of ancient life.
