Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 August 3 [2]The picture shows a bright meteor from the 2018 Perseids meteor shower along the Milky Way Galaxy. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. A Perseid Fireball and the Milky Way Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Dandan Huang Explanation: It was bright and green and flashed as it moved quickly along the Milky Way. It left [4]a trail that took 30 minutes to dissipate. Given the day, August 12, and the direction, away [5]from Perseus, it was likely a small bit from the nucleus of [6]Comet Swift-Tuttle plowing through the [7]Earth's atmosphere -- and therefore part of the annual [8]Perseids meteor shower. The astrophotographer captured the fireball as it shot across the sky in 2018 above a valley in [9]Yichang, Hubei, [10]China. The meteor's streak, also caught [11]on video, ended near the [12]direction of Mars on the lower left. [13]Next week, the 2021 Perseids meteor shower will [14]peak again. This year [15]the Moon will set shortly after [16]the Sun, leaving a night sky ideal for seeing [17]lots of Perseids from dark and clear locations across [18]planet Earth.
