¿ Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 May 17 [2]A picture of edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4565. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. NGC 4565: Galaxy on Edge Image Credit & [3]Copyright: [4]CFHT, [5]Coelum, [6]MegaCam, [7]J.-C. Cuillandre ([8]CFHT) & [9]G. A. Anselmi ([10]Coelum) Explanation: Is our Milky Way Galaxy this thin? Magnificent spiral galaxy [11]NGC 4565 is viewed edge-on from planet Earth. Also known as the [12]Needle Galaxy for its narrow profile, bright [13]NGC 4565 is a stop on many telescopic tours of the northern sky, in the faint but well-groomed constellation [14]Coma Berenices. [15]This sharp, colorful image reveals the spiral galaxy's [16]boxy, bulging central core cut by [17]obscuring dust lanes that lace NGC 4565's thin galactic plane. An [18]assortment of other [19]background galaxies is included in the pretty field of view. Thought similar in shape to our own [20]Milky Way Galaxy, NGC 4565 lies about 40 million [21]light-years distant and spans some 100,000 light-years. Easily spotted with small telescopes, [22]sky enthusiasts consider NGC 4565 to be a prominent celestial masterpiece [23]Messier missed.
