From Bob Roberts@1337:3/135 to All on Tue Oct 27 12:35:14 2020
with releases for Linux. Right now the latest release is 3.18c. I see that Digital Man is almost constatly checking in new code, fixing bugs and tweaking things.

Does he typically bundle those into releases periodicly? Or are we just expected to do a GIT update on our own? I asked him this question and he either didn't understand or I didn't understand his response. He basically said if I want the changes pull them down. Which I get.... but I kinda wanna wait until he's comfortable with it, at which point I assume he makes a "release".

    Hey Bob,

Since I'm brand new to Synchronet, I was wondering what people's
experience is with releases for Linux. Right now the latest release is 3.18c.

From my experience, DM releases about every 12 months (more or less). But daily

Pretty much, whenever you checkout, things seem to always be working (and I think he runs VERT from git master, so if a commit breaks something, and he notices, he fixes it pretty quickly).

I normally rebuild when I a) I remember, and b) I notice the commit change frequency die down a bit. There's been a few times, I've kicked off a rebuild (I run sync in docker, so, I use gitlab CI to rebuild the container), only to see a new "interesting" commit being made and I've thought, that'd be useful...

I've been doing my best to follow best practices, using the /mods/ directory, etc.

I want to start customizing the command shells / menus. That will be my next project on the BBS. Along with hooking up Pablodraw.

Yea so... yer right the current 'stable' release is 3.18a - but even that is an

alpha so I guess I'm wrong in stating that its STABLE. Usually tho, the releases are pretty solid. As a normal user/sysOp, I don't pull down every night or week - but if something important is found while on an alpha, like some feature that is actually BROKEN or.... then I'll do a pull of the daily code for a particular fix.

IMO Synchronet is the most current and developed BBS Software, and yer fine if you just use each release that he puts out. So yer on the right version currently... I'd wait until the next actual release.

Digital Man is really great to his community, but his replies can be lost or interpreted as less than caring to newbie ears. The truth is hes still working that software every week - so...

I do prefer Mystic; mainly because its more like Renegade/'normal' user BBS softwares from back in the day. Synchronet was always the paid/business BBS Software. It's super powerful; if you love code or have a team of people working on your install. :P Mystic has more of the 'cool kids' stuff.

    Cheers, daddio.

Current version is 3.18b. The 3.18a is not alpha though, its just his versioning scheme as he uses letters...see http://wiki.synchro.net/history:versions

It seems like the versions are just snapshots in time, but the software is changing literally every day so if you pull master periodically you'll always the latest fixes, etc. even if its in between versions

Makes sense. I need to get over my fears and try to do a GIT update. If it fails I can just switch to Mystic right? :-P

So if you want to bypass the compile and everything, then you are welcome to use my docker container image.

I rebuild the image often (every few weeks or so), so after the initial setup (which might be a new learning curve), thereafter, all you need to do is "docker pull" and restart the container - takes about a minute or so.

you have one for Mystic, too?

My main BBS is synchronet, and if you connect on port 23, its pretty much a standard Synchronet BBS.

What I am building (depending on moments of enthusiasm), is an ANSI version of Videotex, which is available on port 24. There isnt much
content on port 24 (yet) I really should get something interesting going with it.

I think once I have the message networks working, and regular information postings (like news, sport, finance, weather, etc) it might be more interesting...

As for Mystic, I did run Mystic (a long time ago), so yes, I did have it running in docker. I stopped using it because it didnt fit my
needs - and I its a little too buggy for my use case (and the author doesnt take feedback that well).

Ah but compiling is the fun part. It's the "hope I don't overwrite something I

    customized part" I don't like.

    restart the container - takes

I will check it out soon. Knowing docker is probably a good thing anyways. Appreciate your work to promote it.

I *believe* I just checked that out, without knowing it was you.. found on the fsx WebRing.

It was pretty cool how the system works, a little unknown to me as I was never a part of those networks back in the day - but yea.. jumping around the menus works well once you get the hang of things. Good stuff...

For some reason; that I think I just figured out - I wrote it down as port 443 and could only connect thru an fTelnet module. I'll put 24 in my syncterm and call back every now and again. Thanks, rockstar!
