• Slow CLI when GUI Aps running Mint/Ubuntu

    Hey mL and Paulie,

Both of you had been pondering with me what could have been causing netrunner, syncterm, to slow to a crawl whenever a web browser was open.

Whether a bandaid or a yet perfected feature Fractional Scaling is / was the culprit for me.

As soon as I turned it off system was back to great performance without
the need of a sledge hammer.

FYI and thanks for all your help!

Wow I never would have thought of that, not in a million years. I may have accidentally stumbled upon it, if it were my own system and I was just tinkering and clutching at straws, but man that's a great find and makes a lot of sense.

FYI and thanks for all your help!

Good work, and glad you managed to solve it. You da man!

Did you ever play around with getting off the nvidia-noveux drivers and step down from the newest nvidea-540 to ... 515, then 470, etc etc - cause I think you wanna be off the noveux ones that don't use the full potential of your card. Your nvidea GPU should be able to handle fractional w/o issue.

Another thought - did you do any fractional scaling 'fixes' at all? Cause I know on Wayland I had to do a couple things for fractional to work properly... I didn't think about that.

Yeah, it was buried in the depths of an Ubuntu support blog. I wouldn't have guessed that one either. The great thing though is that one can set the font size and play with other size settings to get a similar result to rescaling, without the drop in video performance. This also, another win, allowed me to reinstall the Nvidia graphics driver which also then fixed video performance (which had prior been glitchy). The computercpu-gui you turned me on to also turbo boosted the PC's performance. TUG is now nice and snappy even when I have 300 youtube video's open (smilez).

    Thank you!

I did for sure! Thanks for that tip. With each drop in version, with fractional scaling on, the performance would have "slight" improvement with 515

being about the best of the bunch; however not any better then the xserver third party driver that mint/ubuntu like to install as default. Turning fractional scaling was the only real and best solution for this particular machine (and many others according to the responses on Ubuntu's support blogs ..) It'll be nice when these these "better then Windows" GUI projects receive

the attention they deserve regarding multiple monitor support and (ahem) casting. BUT, I'm totally ok adjusting the size of "things" using the font settings, etc. as that is what we had to do with the RPI with (I believe) Buster Distro.

Thanks for all your help too Mr. 420!

There may be some tweaks we can make to help fractional scaling work better... I do believe, tho, you gotta get on that Nvidia XXX proper driver first - then we can make fractional scaling work better... theres a few things to do.

Sorry about the last message where I was reminding you to do this, ten - I just

thought about another POSSIBLE helper; you should Google/search like

[your card] Nvidea XXX linux mint driver [best] [issues] [help] [etc]

Maybe with info on your exact card, distro and 'driver' the internet might help

us out to get the best results.
