The online collaboration platform is finally rolling out a tool which will automatically update a user's location when they connect to an office Wi-Fi network. The update, entitled "Workplace Check-in via Wi-Fi" will be great news for those managing hybrid teams, as it will provide more insight about where workers are situated, but could be bad news for those of us looking for a quiet day getting some work done. Wi-Fi, Teams will soon be able to update their work location to reflect the building they're working from."

The update post does add that the feature will be off by default, and admins will be able to decide whether to enable it or not, adding "end-users always have the choice to opt-in or opt-out of sharing this information." This caveat was not included when the feature was first announced way back in October 2025 - its inclusion, and the host of delays, suggests Microsoft has had to hone the tool following initial feedback.

The roadmap post notes, "Workplace Check-in via Wi-Fi acts as an extension of existing capabilities to check in to a building or a reserved desk, providing more flexibility and ease of use to help coordinate with co-workers." The feature is rolling out now to all Teams users across Windows and Mac devices.

The launch will be the latest in a series of recent releases aimed at making Microsoft Teams users more productive when using the service.

This includes letting users promote their vital skills and attributes
directly within Teams via their Microsoft 365 profile card in Teams , giving colleagues and managers a quick view at exactly why they would be good (or bad) for a certain job.

However the platform also recently closed its Together Mode , first released during the pandemic, which let Microsoft Teams users turn their calls into a virtual keynote, lecture theatre or meeting room.

But with many offices now back open and in-person meetings sadly becoming
more common, Microsoft says it has chosen to end the tool in favor of working on other improvements. Follow TechRadar on Google News and add us as a preferred source to get our expert news, reviews, and opinion in your feeds.
