2 creative director Al Hope has revealed that he and the team at Creative Assembly had ideas about making a sequel before finishing the first game.
In an interview with TechRadar Gaming at Summer Game Fest (SGF) 2026, Hope discussed creating a sequel following the massive success of 2014's Alien: Isolation , a game that many look back on as the best Alien game and one of the best horror games ever made. The creative director said he was "super proud of the first game and the reaction to it", even though it felt like the team was "taking a bit of a risk" because "there was nothing really quite
like it," but he also said he had ideas for a sequel even during its development. Latest Videos From Watch full video here:
"I'd been thinking about creating a sequel before we even finished the first game, about what that could be," Hope said. "I suppose it was about once we saw the reception of that first game, and what really people really engaged
in the nature of this experience, where it's not scripted, it's not choreographed."
Hope compared other survivor horror titles, such as Resident Evil , where
"the dog would always jump out the window at the same point," and explained how having an experience where it was "systemic" and the systems that react and respond to the player was the "core" of the Isolation games. You may like Alien: Isolation 2 creative director confirms the sequel will draw
inspiration from the original movie 'Authenticity is the lens we do everything through' 'I think that combination of interior and exterior will create these moments that really live long after the player puts down the controller' Alien: Isolation 2 is designed to 'really stay' with players and be 'unforgettable', says Creative Assembly Creative Assembly is developing
its own custom technology for Alien: Isolation 2 'to really fine tune the experience and create exactly the best Alien experience'
"It felt that's our core," he added, explaining that the idea behind the sequel was "let's just evolve, take what we love, or what people love, and evolve with it", but in ways that feel "intuitive."
"So the first game is all about being in the tin can in space, in the space station, being claustrophobic and trapped, and that's super cool," Hope continued. "We love that. We felt like, what if we were on a planet's surface now, we're being hunted in the exterior, and we had that interior experience as well. "We've had this kind of best of both worlds. And then it was thinking around, okay, well, let's tell a new story. We've got this new world. Let's tell a
new story with a new protagonist, and so I suppose all these things kind of seem to fall into place naturally. I guess that was the, that was the
starting point for us."
As Hope put it, in Isolation 2 , players will be in a new, exterior environment, and the story will be a "continuation" that follows a new protagonist, Blake, but the core experience will still be "improvise to survive the systemic nature of the entities that you encounter" and using familiar tools to accomplish that.
"That real attention to detail in the fidelity of the world and immersion,
the atmosphere that's our core," he said, "A lot of the same rules apply.
It's about line of sight, about not being seen, about what tools you have at hand that can divert, disrupt, distract, so a lot of the gameplay remains the same. In the future, we'll be sharing more interesting ways to survive and evade the creature.
"I guess we saw it as an evolution."
