The answers to today's Strands, game #308, are SNOW SLEET FROST BLIZZARD DRIZZLE FLURRY SPANGRAM: WINTER WEATHER My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

The two pairs of Zs in todays puzzle (theres another) made things a lot
easier although I had to stop myself thinking Freeze would be one of the words.

Mizzle is a particularly British type of WINTER WEATHER that could have
joined the double-Z gang its like drizzle with added mist and its very, erm, mizz-erable. In some parts of the UK they call it Scotch Mist, which sounds a lot more romantic.

I wondered if BLIZZARD could also have a misty variant Mizzard? but it doesnt seem to have caught on. However, I did notice that on YouTube a nine-second video of a lizard wizard in a blizzard has 40,000 views.

The answers to today's Strands, game #315, are STUN ASTONISH GOBSMACK
SURPRISE FLABBERGAST SPANGRAM: MINDBLOWN My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

Theres a couple of brilliant words in todays Strands that feel as if they belong in boys comics from the 1950s and have not been heard much since GOBSMACK and FLABBERGAST.

I was pleased although not particularly gobsmacked to learn that
Flabbergast originated in Sussex, which is the English county where I was born, although quite why that particular area popularized a word which originally meant shocked tubby person is uncertain.

Gobsmack is also interesting and again began as a portmanteau of two slang words Gob (for mouth, coined in Ireland in the 16th century) and Smack,
which describes the sound of a flat hand hitting something so hitting your mouth in shock. Something I instantly imagine Stan Laurel doing.

Meanwhile, todays big SURPRISE was that I completed Strands again without any hints.

The answers to today's Strands, game #322, are SPAM SENT INBOX TRASH DRAFTS STARRED SNOOZED SPANGRAM: EMAIL LABEL My rating: Easy My score: 1 hint

Sometimes its hard to find words to get hints, but todays puzzle was absolutely loaded with them. Probably due to the ordinariness of the words we were looking for.

The early days of office email were much more fun than the strictly business messaging of today, when our INBOX is forever fighting a battle against SPAM and phishing emails.

Back in the day when there was less traffic and you could actually tame your messages, emails brought us Friday listicles and jokes. Occasionally, the
most brilliant thing would happen when someone would accidentally send a personal email to everyone in the entire company. That kind of error could destroy a persons career, but everyone else would get the buzz of enjoying someone elses snafu that could all too easily have been theirs.

The answers to today's Strands, game #329, are NICKEL IRON COBALT CADMIUM ALUMINUM TITANIUM SPANGRAM: PURE METAL My rating: Easy My score: 1 hint

It was pretty obvious from the theme clue what we were looking for today and, of course, my biggest fear was that I would have to spell out ALUMINIUM or rather, ALUMINUM as those of you in the United States would have it. A few very obvious and much easier to find and spell PURE METALs were left out of the puzzle, including Gold, Copper, Zinc and Silver.

As I was completing the game my mind wandered to the heavy metal genre, and the thought that it was named that after IRON Maiden iron being a particularly heavy metal. But actually, Google tells me it comes from the
song Born to Be Wild by the '70s band Steppenwolf, which includes the phrase heavy metal thunder. So today I learned two things that, plus how to spell ALUMINUM.
