    FULL STORY ======================================================================

Good morning! Let's play Connections, the NYT's clever word game that challenges you to group answers in various categories. It can be tough, so read on if you need clues.

What should you do once you've finished? Why, play some more word games of course. I've also got daily Strands hints and answers and Quordle hints and answers articles if you need help for those too, while Marc's Wordle today page covers the original viral word game.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about NYT Connections today is below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers. NYT Connections today (game #571) - today's words (Image credit: New York Times)

Connections today (game #571) - hint #2 - group answers

What are the answers for today's NYT Connections groups? YELLOW: PERCEIVE GREEN: CADENCE BLUE: ONE IN A GROUP OF TWELVE PURPLE: DOG __

Right, the answers are below, so DO NOT SCROLL ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM. NYT Connections today (game #571) - the answers (Image credit: New York Times)

The answers to today's Connections, game #571, are YELLOW: PERCEIVE CATCH, CLOCK, NOTICE, REGISTER GREEN: CADENCE BEAT, METER, RHYTHM, TIME BLUE: ONE IN A GROUP OF TWELVE DONUT, INCH, JUROR, MONTH PURPLE: DOG __ DAYS, PADDLE, TAG, TIRED My rating: Moderate My score: 1 mistake

I took a guess today that BEAT, METER, RHYTHM and TIME were a group, thinking that drumming was the connection and so it proved.

Despite being slow on the uptake, I landed the Yellow group next and was
happy to have sidestepped the TIME, CLOCK, DAYS trap.

There was no brushing off imaginary dust from my shoulders, though, as I failed to see both ONE IN A GROUP OF TWELVE and DOG __ and got home through the sheer luck of shuffling the remain eight words until I got a quartet that looked kind of OK.

When it comes to Connections Ill take any win I can get. Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Wednesday, 1 January, game #570) YELLOW: SLIMY ANIMALS EARTHWORM, EEL, SALAMANDER, SLUG GREEN: THINGS THAT LUMINESCE AURORA,
FIREFLY, GLOWSTICK, RADIUM BLUE: DUTCH SYMBOLS CANAL, CLOG, TULIP, WINDMILL PURPLE: ENDING WITH SYNONYMS FOR "PLUNGE" GATECRASH, RAINDROP, SKYDIVE, WATERFALL What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green
is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as
you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there
are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

The answers to today's Connections, game #578, are YELLOW: VENDOR'S SPOT AT A MARKET BOOTH, STALL, STAND, TABLE GREEN: DOG COMMANDS COME, HEEL, SIT, STAY BLUE: CORPORATE DEPARTMENTS FINANCE, IT, LEGAL, SALES PURPLE: LAST WORDS IN "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL" FROM, SEA, SHINING, TO My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

Its an odd feeling getting the purple group second, and not one Ive experienced often. FROM SEA TO SHINING sea felt almost too obvious like, yellow-group obvious.

My first thought about todays words was Stephen King novels IT, The SHINING, The STAND and thats as far as I got before seeing the LAST WORDS IN AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL and DOG COMMANDS.

VENDORS SPOT AT A MARKET didnt include the best one blanket on the floor,
the spot most often deployed by someone who doesnt have an official spot at the market. Theres a Saturday market near me where another spot comes into play opened suitcase on top of a dustbin. This is a style of selling thats exclusive to perfumes of dubious provenance, the suitcase necessary for
speedy departures. Best to stick to sellers with a BOOTH, STALL, STAND or TABLE. Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Wednesday, 8 January, game #577) YELLOW: SECTION BRANCH, DIVISION, LIMB, WING GREEN: ACCESSORIES FOR PLAYING
AN INSTRUMENT BOW, DRUMSTICK, MALLET, PICK BLUE: DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF AN ELEPHANT EAR, MEMORY, TRUNK, TUSK PURPLE: WORDS MISSPELLED IN NU METAL BAND NAMES BISCUIT, CORN, LINCOLN, STAINED What is NYT Connections?

I really struggled today, even though I got the yellow and blue groups fairly quickly.

My sticking point was INSTALLED ON A WALL, as Id never heard of the word SCONCE before which probably says a lot about my interest in interior design and home makeover shows.

Having said that, I really should have seen the words that had RAT in common.

Sheer guesswork got me over the line. Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Wednesday, 15 January, game #584) YELLOW: MEANS MECHANISM, MEDIUM, TOOL, VEHICLE GREEN: LACKING LIGHT, LOW, SHORT, SHY BLUE: MARTINI SPECIFICATIONS DIRTY, DRY, PERFECT, WET PURPLE: FICTIONAL MISTERS BIG, PEANUT, ROBOT, TOAD What is NYT Connections?

WHIP PURPLE: RHYMES OF U.S. PRESIDENT NAMES PAGAN, SMARTER, VIXEN, WIDEN My rating: Hard My score: 3 mistakes

Oh my gosh I found todays Connections difficult.

Maybe if the RHYMES OF U.S. PRESIDENT NAMES had included Chump I would have got there, but this wasnt the only group I was mentally grappling with.

On my third attempt I managed to link BOMBER, FEDORA, SATCHEL, and WHIP, but it wasnt because I thought they had anything to do with PARTS OF AN INDIANA JONES COSTUME if Im honest, Id forgotten his bag preference.

Cluelessly, I thought they were accessories named after a person, based on
the incorrect assumption that Fedora was someone famous in the 1920s. In
fact, the history of the Fedora is much more interesting and culminates in a 2016 article that described the fedora hat as the worlds most-hated fashion accessory. Yes, this is the same year as a certain red cap rose to
prominence. Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Wednesday, 22 January, game #591) GREEN: RESULTS OF SOME DIGGING DITCH, HOLE, PIT, TRENCH YELLOW: TYPES

Todays random set of words remained random for quite a while, until I slowly made sense of it.

I fell for the very obvious trap, convincing myself that we were looking for angelic accoutrements WINGS, HALO, HARP before abandoning this quest after linking BEER, DIP and PIZZA with snack food essentials.

If a group has anything to do with food then Ill get it, but the second Im required to apply some actual general knowledge I flounder and this was the case today with STARTING WITH EUROPEAN CAPITALS; Paris and Rome I should have seen, but Riga, the capital of Latvia, was a stretch. And full disclosure I thought the capital of Switzerland was Zurich, not Bern.

How did you do today? Let me know in the comments below.
