The answers to today's Strands, game #245, are CLASS PHYLUM ORDER FAMILY SPECIES GENUS DOMAIN SPANGRAM: TAXONOMY My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

You might need to be a bit of a science geek to solve today's Strands,
because it features a few words that not everyone will be familiar with. Or
at least that many people won't have heard since school biology lessons.

TAXONOMY, as the spangram has it, is the subject of the game and that word
is a tricky one to find in its own right. But harder still are surely PHYLUM and GENUS, with the first of those in particular a word that really doesn't appear in any other context.

My own game went very well, because I am a bit of a science geek, and I got lucky with my early guesses. I found CLASS while searching for hint words to use in this column, and put that together with the theme clue of 'In my kingdom' to establish what the central concept was. I then found the likes of FAMILY, SPECIES and yes PHYLUM, and was able to complete the set with no major hiccups.

The answers to today's Strands, game #252, are JUMP CIVIL STRONG BUSINESS BIRTHDAY LEISURE SPANGRAM: WELLSUITED My rating: Moderate My score: 2 hints

I find myself disagreeing with the NYT's choice of theme hint fairly often. This is possibly unfair, because as I know from experience it can be a very tricky thing to think of a clue that is helpful without giving the game away. But even bearing that in mind, the choice of 'Nice fit' here seems slightly misleading. After all, 'nice fit' works perfectly well for the spangram, WELLSUITED, and for some of today's answers for instance LEISURE and JUMP. But it doesn't work for CIVIL or BIRTHDAY at all; these are types of suit, yes, but they aren't a 'nice fit' in any way. STRONG can be if something is your strong suit, it is a good fit for you. But CIVIL in particular no, it needed a different clue here.

That set me on the wrong path here, and I needed two hints to establish that yes, all of the answers were types of suit. Once I knew that it was pretty easy to find the others. And maybe that's why it's best that the hint did throw me off the scent because without that I'd have probably had yet
another perfect game, and that gets boring after a while

Cameras at the ready? Then off you go in search of LANDMARKS. These days you'll need to take a selfie in front of them, thus proving to the world that you were there, because that's the important thing, right? And do make sure you share it with everyone too, rather than enjoying the CASTLE, PALACE or MONUMENT for its own aesthetic value.

I'm not sure why this Strands triggered me to this extent probably I'm just grumpy this morning but I have no such problems with the puzzle itself,
which is just fine. Not very difficult, admittedly, once I'd got started. But that was itself a simple task, given that TOWER sat prominently on the left side of the grid. An easy day.

Now, this is more like it! This is absolutely the hardest Strands puzzle
we've had for weeks, in large part because the concept is much more abstract than some of the recent list-items-in-a-specific-category games.

Instead, this is akin to the 'Blank word' groups you regularly get in Connections, with all of these being words that can go after LITTLE: LEAGUE, RASCALS, ROCK, DEVIL, WOMEN and so on. The only ones I don't understand are SPOON and FOOT, but I presume they have some relevance for others and that's just a lack of general knowledge on my part shining through.

Anyway, I solved it in the end, but had to think about it for a while, and didn't really get what the concept was until about halfway through; I kept finding words based on nothing more than looking for letters that often went together, then using the limited options in some corners of the board to get more. It was only when I got RASCALS that it became clear, which led me to
the spangram and ultimately success. Good work, NYT.
