This is one of my favorite Strands puzzle of the past few weeks. It's niche enough to present a challenge, but doesn't require any truly specialist knowledge. Sure, you'll have found it easier if you're a hairdresser, but that's not required!

Some of the words were quite difficult, though. I've never heard of a FAUXHAWK, although fortunately it was the final answer I needed to get, so I was able to solve it through a certain amount of trial and error. Several of the others required me to wrack my brains for hairstyles that I've had
myself, in most cases many years ago. But I got there in the end.

The answers to today's Strands, game #221, are JUMBLE SUDOKU JIGSAW MAZE CROSSWORD CRYPTOGRAM SPANGRAM: PUZZLES My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

Give me a puzzle and I'll solve it; give me a puzzle about puzzles and I'll solve it and enjoy every second while doing so. Today's Strands is exactly that a puzzle about puzzles. I was somewhat surprised not to see Wordle, Connections or indeed Strands in there, but the likes of SUDOKU, JUMBLE and CROSSWORD were all obvious enough that this didn't cause me any trouble.

This was another Strands puzzle that I didn't really enjoy. I don't play FANTASYLEAGUE any more, because I found that it took all the joy out of sport for me. Even if I did, I wouldn't have been familiar with some of the terms here it's very much based on football fantasy league, I think, with the
likes of DRAFT, WAIVERS and ROSTER, rather than the soccer kind that I used
to play. As a result, I needed four hints and was never really on top of things. Hopefully tomorrow will be more fun.

I realize that this confession might get me kicked out of my home nation, the UK, but I have never drunk tea. Not a single cup has ever passed my lips which meant I was at an ever greater disadvantage today than some will be.

Even setting aside my own drinking habits, this Strands puzzle is strangely specific. Why MASALACHAI? We've previously had one Strands game about coffee, with the likes of MOCHA and LATTE, but even though I don't drink that either
I was at least able to make informed guesses based on just having lived in a world in which other people regularly do drink it. But the theme here isn't 'types of tea' with ginseng or green or breakfast or whatever it's specifically the ingredients for masala chai. That may well be very popular, but if you don't drink it, you're a bit stuck.

Fortunately I only needed one hint. I spotted PEPPER by accident, then asked Strands to give me a clue and got ANISE. Though I still had no idea what the spangram might be, I had a strong hunch that the other answers would be spices, so found the likes of CARDAMOM and NUTMEG by trial and error. That left the spangram, which revealed itself on the board to make up for my lack of knowledge in this subject.

I'm a staunch traditionalist when it comes to Halloween costumes: they need
to be spooky, otherwise what's the point? I think this might be yet another cultural difference between America and the UK, possibly, although I increasingly see it creeping up on us over here too, with more and more
people attending Halloween parties dressed as, well, whatever they want. And
I say stop this! Go as a GHOST, go as a MUMMY, go as a WITCH. Maybe go as a PUMPKIN not scary, but Halloween at least or just about a CLOWN, if it's a scary one. Then again, they're all scary in a sense.

Today's Strands isn't strictly Halloween themed, because the spangram is merely COSTUMES rather than having the word Halloween in there, but then
again the theme clue was 'Trick or treat'. For that reason it took me
slightly longer to spot PRINCESS (not acceptable for Halloween, sorry) and PIRATE (ditto), but really this was still among the easiest games in recent days.
