The answers to today's Strands, game #184, are TOLL RING CLANG PEAL KNELL JINGLE TINKLE CHIME SPANGRAM: BELLTONES My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

Who knew there were so many different words for BELL TONES, as the spangram would have it? Well, me for one because I found this to be very, very easy. The theme clue of 'Striking sounds' was a fairly hefty hint towards the concept here, and when I spotted TOLL by accident it confirmed my suspicion
as to what was needed. Without even needing to look at the board I predicted that the likes of PEAL, RING and CHIME would be there, and the spangram
itself was similarly simple to uncover.

The answers to today's Strands, game #191, are WALTZ QUICKSTEP FOXTROT SALSA JIVE RUMBA SPANGRAM: BALLROOMDANCE My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

I have never tried ballroom dancing, and I almost certainly never will but that didn't stop me completing this Strands puzzle in quick time. It's a very simple one, helped no end by the fact that the spangram, BALLROOMDANCE, is very long and winds its way across the center of the board. This reduces the possibilities for the letters surrounding it, making it easy to spot the
likes of QUICKSTEP and SALSA. Uncommon letters helped, too there's an X, a Z and a Q in there, and all are typically easier to work with than more common characters.

The answers to today's Strands, game #198, are SPRING TRAMPOLINE ECHO BASKETBALL KANGAROO SPANGRAM: LETSBOUNCE My rating: Moderate My score: 1 hint

I have only one problem with today's Strands and that's the spangram. Unless LETSBOUNCE is an Americanism that I'm not familiar with, I don't get why that's the answer, rather than just BOUNCE on its own.

That really tripped me up today; the combination of theme clue and uncovering SPRING by accident led me to the general concept, and I was able to find TRAMPOLINE, ECHO and BASKETBALL without too much trouble. But I couldn't make two more words out of the remaining letters. I could see BOUNCE was there,
but it didn't turn blue (or yellow), and I couldn't work out what word could go before (or after) it. Eventually I used a hint, which gave me KANGAROO, at which point the spangram revealed itself.

I probably found this Strands game to be even easier than most given that
I've been reading SCIENCEFICTION, as the spangram would have it, for about four decades. But even if I hadn't I doubt I would have struggled too much here. Some of the words are slightly, well, basic for the topic as I said, I read a lot of sci-fi and MUTANTS and MARTIANS really don't crop up that much compared to plenty of other themes, such as time-travel, space flight, AI and the cyberverse. But as a child's guide to the genre, it just about works.
