I hate this Strands. Not the puzzle itself which is just about fine. But CALIFORNIAROLL, which is a disgusting concoction simply because it contains MAYO. Mayo is one of the worst things ever not just a terrible food, but a plague on society, because IT IS USED IN ALMOST EVERYTHING AND I HATE IT. Listen, you don't need mayo in things. It doesn't make it better. In fact, it spoils it. Just leave it out and taste the actual ingredients rather than smearing this horrible stuff everywhere. Especially in sushi, which doesn't need it at all.

Oh yeah, so there's a game to talk about here too, right? Well it's a reasonably easy one on account of the spangram taking up about half of the board. Most of the answers are relatively easy to find, and if you like mayo then I'm sure you'll be delighted with the whole thing.

The answers to today's Strands, game #189, are LILAC MAUVE MAGENTA VIOLET
PLUM LAVENDER ORCHID SPANGRAM: PURPLES My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

Here's a nice, simple Strands puzzle for the weekend, that merely involves finding tones of purple. The theme clue of 'A royal shade' rather gave the game away, because everyone knows that purple is the color of royalty (though I admit that I don't know why). I then spotted the spangram, PURPLES, as my first word, which was great as it divided the board neatly in half and made
it easier to find the other answers.

Some of those were, admittedly, a little simpler to uncover than others; I thought of, and found, the likes of LILAC, MAGENTA, MAUVE and VIOLET very quickly, but had to work a little harder for LAVENDER and (particularly) ORCHID, the latter of which didn't occur to me as a shade of purple; orchids come in lots of colors, after all. But by the time I got to that there were only so many words that could be formed, so overall this was a
straightforward Strands to play.

Thank heavens for Mad Men. I devoured the brilliant AMC show during lockdown, having somehow missed it when it originally aired about a decade before, and without it I probably would have found today's Strands to be far, far
tougher. As it was, I remembered lead character Don Draper's favorite drink and therefore the spangram OLDFASHIONED.

Not that I knew the ingredients as such but I remembered enough that finding the likes of BITTERS, WATER, CHERRY and SUGAR wasn't an impossible task. It might have been without WHISKEY, but fortunately the theme clue of 'On the rocks' had set me on the path to searching for that, making the whole thing more manageable than it would otherwise have been.

As is so often the case with Strands, the key today was in working out what the theme was, because once you had that the answers were all pretty obvious. The theme clue of 'I've got you under my skin' was a nice one cryptic, but not to the extent that you didn't have any idea what kind of thing you could be looking for. I found BRAIN by accident, and that was enough to make it clear what the other solutions would be. Finding the likes of KIDNEYS and LIVER was easy enough, and once the spangram was in place there was very little room for failure.

Today I learned for the first time of KOHLRABI, a vegetable whose name apparently translates literally as 'cabbage turnip' and which tastes a little like a broccoli stem. Fortunately the other answers today were a lot easier
to find, although I did struggle a little with the spangram, FALLHARVEST, because here in the UK we say 'autumn' not 'fall'. But no matter I was able to uncover enough answers that eventually the spangram revealed itself to me, and though it still took me a while to work out that the final word was
indeed the aforementioned KOHLRABI, I got there without needing hints.
