The answers to today's Strands, game #157, are DOUGH MISTLETOE WHOA RAINBOW CHATEAU AVOCADO SPANGRAM: RHYMETIME My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

I sort of like this Strands puzzle, but also don't. Let me explain: on the
one hand, I love the concept of 'words that all end with an 'O' sound. And I love even more that they're all different O sounds; OUGH, OE, OA, OW, EAU and indeed O. It's creative, it's challenging and it makes for a great instalment of Strands.

However, it has a flaw and it concerns the spangram. The game's rules state that the spangram "describes the game's theme", but today's is RHYMETIME.
Does that really describe the theme? Well, in one sense because obviously
all of these words rhyme. But the theme here isn't just 'rhyming words', it's specifically 'rhyming words that all have an 'O' sound'. I'm not sure how
that could have been turned into a spangram, admittedly, but surely the NYT's puzzle setters could have tried.

Still, I'm being picky here. This is a fun Strands game that I enjoyed playing, and that's enough for me.

I found this Strands puzzle a little harder than most people will or at
least those of you playing in the United States. That's because not all of these styles of HOUSES are common outside of the US; I'd never heard of CRAFTSMAN, for instance, and the likes of RANCH and COLONIAL are not terms that would be used here in the UK (though I had heard of them). Fortunately the others were pretty simple, as was the spangram itself, so I was able to uncover them all without too many problems.

I'm unusual (in the TechRadar office at least) in not caring in the slightest about my birthday. I don't celebrate it, and haven't done for years - it's just another day. I don't resent people who go big on their birthdays as
such, but I do wonder why it's so important that we mark the fact the Earth has rotated various multiples of 365 times since the day we were born. I
think this might just be me, though.

Anyway, this was one of those Strands games where I simply could not get started without help. The theme clue of 'one for the ages' simply didn't give me enough to go on to work out the concept, so I used up a hint, which gave
me the word CAKE, and after that it wasn't so bad.

The answers to today's Strands, game #178, are FERRY TRAIN STREETCAR MONORAIL SUBWAY SPANGRAM: PUBLICTRANSPORT My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

This is an incredibly straightforward and very easy Strands puzzle, with no real complications at all. The theme clue of 'Commuter benefits' pretty much gives the game away, and once you found the likes of FERRY or TRAIN you'll have known exactly what you needed to do here.

That said, there was one minor complication namely that the spangram was
very long and potentially hard to find. I spotted TRANSPORT early on, and figured it was part of the spangram, but it didn't turn yellow and I knew it wouldn't do, because it didn't touch two sides of the board. It was only relatively late on that I realized it had the word PUBLIC in front of it, at which point everything clicked into place.
