The answers to today's Strands, game #156, are SHEET BLANKET TOWEL PILLOWCASE TABLECLOTH SPANGRAM: LINENCLOSET My rating: Moderate My score: 1 hint

I was a little thrown by the theme clue of 'Bed, bath and beyond' today,
going down a slightly wrong route due to the 'bath and beyond' aspect.
Unknown to me at the time I played, Bed, Bath & Beyond was a US retailer specializing in homewares, a fact of which I'm sure anyone reading this is North America will be aware. However, I'm writing this in the UK, and I
wasn't aware of it which meant I didn't realize the 'bath' aspect in particular was a red herring for the game and indeed, that the likes of TABLECLOTH and TOWEL (two things that don't go on a bed) might also be included.

As it happens, I found SHEET and BLANKET on my own, then got TOWEL via a
hint, and that gave me enough info to be able to find the rest, including the spangram LINENCLOSET.

The answers to today's Strands, game #163, are DICTIONARY THESAURUS HANDBOOK ATLAS ALMANAC SPANGRAM: REFERENCE My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

One for the kids here, with five answers that few people under the age of about 25 will probably have ever used. OK, that's a little OTT; online dictionaries obviously exist. But ALMANAC? HANDBOOK? ATLAS? I asked my own teens (both 14 years old) and they had no clue what an ALMANAC was, at least. The other two they had heard of, but whether they would have thought to guess them is a different matter.

I had no such problems, as a creature of advanced years, and solved this one fairly swiftly. Though again, I'm not sure I'd have got ALMANAC if it wasn't the only word left by the time I got to it

The answers to today's Strands, game #170, are UMBRELLA HOOD SLICKER PONCHO GALOSHES GAITERS SPANGRAM: RAINGEAR My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

I've marked this as moderate, despite the fact I solved it without needing
any in-game hints, because a few of the answers are a bit obscure. I've never heard of GAITERS, for instances, and GALOSHES was probably a word I last
heard about 40 years ago when my grandmother was taking me out for a walk in the rain. Are they still a thing? Or actually, is this another American English vs British English thing? Plus, the spangram is that well known
phrase RAINGEAR. Ahem.

Still, UMBRELLA, PONCHO and HOOD were all easy solves, and the way the
letters fell meant solving it via a combination of random guessing and actual brainpower was possible.

The answers to today's Strands, game #177, are PEPPERS ZUCCHINI EGGPLANT TOMATOES ONIONS SPANGRAM: RATATOUILLE My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

As Strands' theme clues go, today's is among the most cryptic we've had
until you know the answer, of course. 'Pixar fare' refers to the classic animated movie RATATOUILLE, which forms the spangram, but the actual theme of the game is not cartoon films but rather the French dish ratatouille, or rather the ingredients for it.

Whether that held you back or not will probably have depended on how much
time you spent simply looking randomly for answers. I found PEPPERS and ZUCCHINI without actively trying to, and that was enough to make me realize that I should start looking for vegetables. I still couldn't see the connection with Pixar, but it didn't matter, because once I found EGGPLANT
and TOMATOES the spangram revealed itself too.
