The answers to today's Strands, game #153, are BAROQUE MODERN ROMANTIC CLASSICAL MEDIEVAL SPANGRAM: ARTHISTORY My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

I solved this one in rather a roundabout way, getting the spangram first then finding the individual answers, but if not I might well have struggled. The theme clue of 'A night at the museum' didn't suggest ARTHISTORY or the likes of ROMANTIC and BAROQUE to me; I was thinking dinosaurs and romans and
mummies and so on

Still, with ARTHISTORY in place it became obvious what kind of words I needed to find, and I ticked them all off with a minimum of fuss from there.

The answers to today's Strands, game #160, are HOCKEY CONTROL LICORICE MEMORY SWIZZLE CINNAMON SPANGRAM: STICKS My rating: Moderate My score: 1 hint

Though this Strands puzzle isn't difficult as such, I found it impossible to get started without using a hint; the theme clue, 'Not just for poking', was simply too vague. Yes, of course it makes sense in hindsight but that's not much use now!

Once I had that first word, HOCKEY, things were a lot easier. CONTROL stood out at the bottom of the board, the spangram, STICK was also rather obvious, and by that stage it was simply a case of fitting words into the board.

The answers to today's Strands, game #167, are LEAF APPLE PICKLE SALAMI WATERMELON SPANGRAM: HUNGRYCATERPILLAR My rating: Hard My score: 5 hints

OK, so what we have here is the most difficult, stupidest Strands puzzle for weeks unless you happen to a) know what the reference to 'Carle classic' means and b) remember what all of the things eaten by the HUNGRYCATERPILLAR were.

I did not recall that Eric Carle was the author of that classic children's book, until after I got the spangram and realized what linked these answers. In my defense, my daughters are 14. It is at least 11 years since I read that book to them, and expecting me (or anyone else) to remember the dietary choices of a growing insect after more than a decade is, well, stupid. Plus, it's called the VERY Hungy Caterpillar, but 'very' doesn't feature in the spangram.

Anyway, I needed clues for every single one of the answers other than PICKLE, which I got by accident, so this was deeply unsatisfying.

I do like a nice cracker with a bit of cheese, but have hardly heard of any
of the types in today's Strands, so struggled to uncover them all and needed
a couple of hints. RICE and WATER I'm aware of (and have eaten), GOLDFISH I was vaguely aware of from TV and movies but SODA, OYSTER and SALTINE nope, no experience with them. Well, I say that, but it turns out I am aware of them, I'd just never heard them called that.

Anyway, you don't care about my eating habits, so I'll shut up about it and simply say that if you got the rather easy spangram which the theme clue didn't really help with AT ALL plus maybe one or two of the others, you'll probably have been OK today.

The answers to today's Strands, game #181, are SPOONS BROOM COWBELL WASHBOARD STOVEPIPE BONES SPANGRAM: JUGBAND My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

I'd never heard the term JUGBAND until today, but fortunately the theme clue of 'Makeshift music', coupled with my finding SPOONS early on, cemented the central concept in my mind very early on today.

That made the task easier but still not easy, because a couple of entries aside (WASHBOARD, COWBELL) I didn't know these things were used as instruments. Solving it therefore became a task in trial and error, with me looking for words, playing them, and seeing if they were answers. How do you play a BROOM? What is a STOVEPIPE? I may never know the answer (unless I look it up), but I am at the very least intrigued now.
