It took me ages to get started with today's Strands, to the extent that I needed a hint to get going. The theme of 'Here, there and everywhere' suggested only 'The Beatles' to me, which was obviously wrong (though I did check), so it was only when the game gave me ABOVE that it became clear what
I was looking for. After that it was easy: there are only so many LOCATION-based words, and I was able to find them all in a couple of minutes.

My only issue with today's Strands puzzle is that the answers here don't necessarily reflect my own experience of camping. Don't get me wrong, I love camping but surely the answers should include the likes of ARGUEWITHTHEKIDS, SHIVERINTHERAIN and WISHYOUWEREATHOMEINTHEWARM. But that's Britain for you.

Anyway, this is a decent edition of Strands, albeit not too tricky. The theme clue rather gave the game away, but there's a wide enough scope for answers that they weren't all obvious.

Strands is at its best when it plays with language, rather than just being collections of words within a simple theme (although they can sometimes be lots of fun to solve too). Today's is a good example: every answer here is part of a pair of words that together form a phrase that's used to mean OPTIONS, the spangram.

For instance, we have SINK or SWIM, DOUBLE or NOTHING, FEAST or FAMINE and MAKE or BREAK. Very clever. The trouble is that these games can be hard to identify. I uncovered SINK, MAKE and BREAK by accident before I realized what was going on, and even after that I had to do a fair bit of hunting to find the first half of each puzzle, before I could then look for the second (which was usually a lot easier to identify, obviously).

I got them all in the end, but it took me longer than some Strands puzzles. And that, ultimately, is a good thing.

The answers to today's Strands, game #173, are MUSK SANDALWOOD CEDAR ROSE LEMON LAVENDER SPANGRAM: COMMONSCENTS My rating: Moderate My score: 2 hints

No complaints about today's Strands, it was simply too difficult for me to solve without needing some hints. But it's a good one in general nicely coherent in terms of the theme clue and spangram working properly together
and with six other answers that were all gettable but not easy.

The problem, as I found, was that even when I knew what I needed to do, I couldn't wrestle any COMMONSCENTS from the deepest regions of my brain and on to the Strands board. LEMON was obvious, and I spotted SANDALWOOD simply because of its position on the corner/side of the board, but for some reason
I couldn't think of the likes of MUSK and ROSE, even though with hindsight they are obvious. I got there in the end, though, and that's enough for me today.

Ah, now this is more like it! Or at least it is as far as I'm concerned; if you're not a gamer, and never have been, this will likely have been
absolutely impossible, because there's really nothing that links these words beyond the fact that all are popular VIDEO GAMES.

I am a gamer and have played (and loved) FALLOUT, UNCHARTED and MINECRAFT.
And though I've never been into HALO or OVERWATCH, I am well aware that they exist and are very popular. So this was a cinch for me, from the second I found FALLOUT (which is probably in my top 10 favorite games ever, assuming we're talking about FALLOUT 3 no need to email me stating that New Vegas is better, it isn't). But if you don't own a PlayStation, Xbox or gaming PC
well, you're probably looking at a fail today.
