The answers to today's Strands, game #121, are STEAM DEGLAZE BRAISE FLAMBE BLANCH POACH SIMMER SPANGRAM: COOKING My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

Strands is often a simple game: you work out what the theme clue is, get one answer to confirm your theory, solve the others reasonably easily. But occasionally you can tick off the first two actions but struggle with the third. Today was one of those games.

The theme clue, heat and eat, was relatively obvious, and when I uncovered STEAM early on I thought this would be a cinch. But no. There was no BOIL or BROIL or GRILL or GRIDDLE or TOAST or ROAST or FRY. No MICROWAVE or BAKE or BARBECUE. Where were the answers?!

Eventually, I uncovered DEGLAZE almost by accident and realized I would need more advanced cooking techniques. The spangram, which was simply COOKING,
made things a little simpler, dividing the board in half nicely. And then it was a case of me needing to search my brain for ways to prepare food. I got them all in the end, but it took me a while.

Confession: I had never heard the term 'art museum' before today. It's possible that I'm an uneducated heathen who has no knowledge of the finer arts, but I suspect it's more a language barrier thing. I _think_ that the term art gallery is more widely used here in the UK it's certainly what I'd use to describe the likes of the Tate in London. Or maybe I'm just an
educated heathen.

Anyway, that confusion aside, I solved this without any real problems. The theme clue left little doubt as to what was needed, and as soon as I found SCULPTURE I was up and running and on the hunt for more. It was only the spangram due to the aforementioned gallery/museum confusion - and LITHOGRAPH (because it's a long and complicated word) that delayed me completing it in record time.

This was one of those Strands games where I was a little uncertain about what the connection was here until I solved the first one, at which point everything became very easy. That first word, in my case, was CHICK, and I immediately realized that now I need more baby animals or BABY ANIMAL, as
the spangram would have it.

After that all I needed to do was cast my mind back to when my kids were young, back in the days when I seemed to spend about 50% of my waking hours impersonating farmyard animals of some kind. But no, I didn't make the noises as I was solving the Strands puzzle

The answers to today's Strands, game #142, are SUPERLATIVE EXCELLENT ICONIC PERFECT SUPREME SPANGRAM: CHAMPION My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

Once again, a Strands puzzle that essentially turns out to be 'synonyms for another word' is an easy one to solve. That makes sense, given that it's generally a simpler task to think of other words that mean the same thing
than it is to think of words related to a particular topic if you don't know much about the topic in question

Anyway, the theme here was apparent once I found SUPERLATIVE (having tried
and failed with SUPER), and when coupled with the theme clue of 'You're the best!' EXCELLENT was an easy solve in the top right after that, so to the spangram, CHAMPION. It took me a little while to get the next one, ICONIC,
but the final two fell into place with no problem after that.

I have never done yoga, and I almost certainly never will do yoga. My knowledge of yoga is at best minimal. So, yes, I struggled to solve today's Strands. I'm not complaining; millions of people do yoga every day, it's a perfectly legitimate inclusion in the game, but it's just not right for me.

I therefore needed a combination of lucky guesses and hints to solve it,
which never makes for the most satisfying experience. Oh well, there's always tomorrow.
