The answers to today's Strands, game #97, are BEACH CAMP POPSICLE CARNIVAL LEMONADE HOPSCOTCH SPANGRAM: SUMMER My rating: Confused My score: Perfect

Not for the first time, I'm completely baffled by the reasoning here. For those of you who have stumbled across this column for the first time, I'm based in the UK and I accept that the cultural differences between the UK
and US may explain my inability to understand what's going on here. Or
rather, I won't accept it; it shouldn't be the case that the game is so heavily skewed towards one country. Yes, the NYT is a US newspaper, but the internet is worldwide and the whole Wordle phenomenon was to a large extent based on the fact that it appealed to people everywhere. This this is just odd.

Exhibit A: why is HOPSCOTCH here? What does that have to do with SUMMER? Does HOPSCOTCH mean something different in the US than it does in the UK? And why is 'Beat the heat' the theme clue? A POPSICLE might help you beat the heat, sure and indeed that was the first word I found. But how does CARNIVAL help you beat the heat? Or CAMP? It's a weird mish-mash of words. I solved it, but I almost wish that I hadn't.

The answers to today's Strands, game #104, are SQUID LOBSTER CLAM WHALE OCTOPUS CORAL SHARK SPANGRAM: MARINELIFE My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

Another nice Strands puzzle; I'm coming to the conclusion that they work far better when they don't try too hard. Just give us some related words and let us find them. Admittedly, that can lead to the game being too easy, as it possibly is today. With puzzles like these the theme clue arguably needs to
be more cryptic, so that you don't immediately know what kind of thing you're looking for, as I did today.

I spotted SQUID very quickly, because it's usually easy to find words with a
Q in them, simply because you know they'll be followed by a U, and that will therefore narrow down the options for the way the word could develop.
LOBSTER, CLAM, WHALE, OCTOPUS all followed, then the spangram, and I finished off with CORAL and SHARK for the full set.

Other than the fact that I got a little hung up on urban night creatures, looking in vain for the likes of FOX and BADGER, this was another fairly easy Strands puzzle. I didn't necessarily know that AARDVARKs and WOMBATs are nocturnal, but SKUNK, OPPOSUM and COYOTE were all easy, meaning I solved this one with no real problems.

I'm a proper space buff and spend much of my free time staring at the skies through a telescope, taking photos of distant galaxies and nebulae or more often cursing the fact that it's a cloudy night yet again.

Anyway, that helped me find all of the answers easily once again today well, once I'd worked out what the theme was. I'd uncovered dozens of potential answers, all of which ended up merely being hints (none of which I used), before I finally got COMET, and realized what the connection was. After that it was plain sailing, other than the spangram, which took me a little while
to identify.
