The answers to today's Strands, game #62, are PSYCHO POLTERGEIST HALLOWEEN HOSTEL SCREAM SPANGRAM: SCARYMOVIE My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

This was a pretty easy Strands puzzle. Some of that was due to the theme
being something close to my heart namely horror movies. I've watched every one of the answers, and many more besides, which definitely helped me to
solve it. But it also benefitted from some of the letter placement making it easier to find the words. Take PSYCHO in the bottom left corner: there's a grid of six consonants together in that corner of the board, which means the ways in which the letters can be combined are drastically reduced. I was able to find that answer with little effort as a result, which together with the theme hint of 'The horror' confirmed what I was looking for. After that, the task was a mere matter of me wracking my brain for classic horror flicks. POLTERGEIST was the only slightly tricky one, simply because I couldn't spell it

COURT BOUTONNIERE SPANGRAM: PROMNIGHT My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

I'm only marking this one as moderate because here in the UK, prom night is not really a thing, or at least it wasn't when I was growing up. My
experience of it is therefore almost entirely from watching US TV and movies, and sadly 'bucket of pigs blood falling over the prom queen' was not on the list.

Fortunately, PROMNIGHT itself, the spangram, was easy enough to find, and
most of the others were relatively straightforward. That said, if it hadn't been for the fact that BOUTONNIERE was on its own at the bottom of the board below PROMNIGHT, I'd have had no chance of finding it; I've literally never heard that word before.

The answers to today's Strands, game #76, are DIVIDE MULTIPLY CALCULATE SUBTRACT DERIVE SPANGRAM: MATHEMATICS My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

A surprisingly tough Strands puzzle today, considering there are limited options once you know what the theme is. Much of that difficulty comes from the fact that there are only five answers plus the spangram, and that almost all of them are quite long words that require some unpicking. Even those that aren't (DERIVE and DIVIDE are the shortest, at six characters each) foxed me for quite some time, because I couldn't work out how to actually construct
the word out of the letters on offer. Too many Es and Is and Vs!

It is, however, a Strands puzzle that you can solve through a combination of bruteforce and knowing what the likely answers are and there really are only so many once you realise it's all about math.

The answers to today's Strands, game #83, are TIME STAKE MOOSE LEAK CHILLY MEET PAIR SERIAL SPANGRAM: HOMOPHONES My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

This is great. After all, the reason why we all love word games is that they get us thinking about language. And (as you'd hope would be the case for someone who spends their days writing), I love language.

HOMOPHONES was the spangram, and the nicely cryptic 'Sounds delicious!' sort of gave the game away, or at least should have done once you uncovered one answer. For me, that was TIME which, of course, sounds like 'thyme'.

After that, I spotted the spangram, which gave the board some structure, then worked methodically around the remainder. But it wasn't easy anything but. There are nine answers to find today, and lots of common consonants and
vowels with which to assemble your words, so it's a tricky beast all right. Still, I'd rather a hard-but-fun puzzle like this than a few other recent Strands puzzles, so more of this please, NYT!
