New month, same old (relatively new) NYT Strands. That means a 6x8 grid of letters, hidden within which are a number of answers grouped around a theme. It's brought to you by the people behind Wordle and Connections, and it's rather difficult. Read on for some hints.

The answers to today's Strands, game #59, are THIMBLE IRON SHIP WHEELBARROW RACECAR PENGUIN SPANGRAM: MONOPOLY My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

I loved MONOPOLY as a kid, although my sisters probably didn't love the zeal with which I would routinely bankrupt them. Anyway, this was a fun Strands puzzle, albeit not too taxing.

Four-letter words are the easiest to find in Strands, so it always helps when there are a couple of them among the answers. The two hidden within today's puzzle IRON and SHIP were enough for me to confirm what the theme here was, when added to the hint of 'A token of our appreciation'.

The only issue was that I have no idea what the tokens in MONOPOLY are these days. When did a PENGUIN get added? But finding the spangram was very easy once I knew what I was looking for, and that pointed the way to the likes of THIMBLE and RACECAR once the board had some structure.

The answers to today's Strands, game #66, are BINARY WHOLE LUCKY BACON DANCE SERIAL TELEPHONE SPANGRAM: NUMBERS My rating: Moderate My score: Perfect

I thought this Strands puzzle would be easy, but not so. The theme clue 'Can you digit?' (following 'Can you dig it?' yesterday; nice work, NYT) immediately suggested numbers, and indeed I found that spangram running backwards across the board almost immediately. BINARY and WHOLE, both beneath the spangram, were simple solves too, and LUCKY followed by virtue of there being nothing else it could be.

But LUCKY indicated that it might be harder than I'd predicted, and here I stalled. Unlike the first couple, LUCKY is not a mathematical term (or not necessarily one), simply one that precedes 'numbers'. And that was the case with almost all of the others. It took me quite some time to come up with any of the others; I spotted PHONE, but it didn't turn blue, and it was only a while later that I realized it was TELEPHONE instead.

The others were all horrible. I wasn't thinking broadly enough to consider BACON or DANCE, and SERIAL just took ages because of all of the vowels. I got there in the end, but it wasn't exactly a cake walk.

I've never played baseball, because here in the UK we play cricket instead. However, I've seen enough US movies and TV shows that I had the knowledge I needed to easily solve this edition of the NYT's Strands puzzle.

The task was made easier by the word MOUND standing out so prominently, and that combined with the theme clue of American pastime set me on my way. None of the other answers caused me any trouble at all and I solved this Strands game in super-quick time. I doubt too many people will be troubled by it at all.

It's a common refrain from me that Strands can be very, very difficult until something clicks at which point it becomes a lot more approachable. Today's game is another good example of that. 'Home grown', as a theme clue, is actually reasonably helpful, but it wasn't enough for me to realize that what I needed here was herbs. It was only once I stumbled upon BASIL, entirely by accident, that I understood what was needed and from that time on (THYME
on?) it was simply a matter of finding the words.

The lyrics to Scarborough Fair , lodged firmly in my mind from both the Simon & Garfunkel cover and from Bob Dylan's peerless Girl from the North Country , helped me find several more, which was a nice bonus because the latter is now on repeat in my head, and that's never a bad thing.

The answers to today's Strands, game #87, are WEIGHTS ROWER BIKE TREADMILL CABLES ELLIPTICAL SPANGRAM: FITNESS My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

This one wasn't too bad, with the word WEIGHTS standing out to me very early on. Combined with the not-so-cryptic theme clue of 'A good workout', it was clear that what I needed here was gym equipment. Now, the fact that I haven't been to a gym in more than 20 years might have hurt me here, but thankfully
it didn't prevent me from coming up with the rather obvious ROWER, BIKE and TREADMILL, and getting my game underway.

Things got easier still after that. The spangram of FITNESS stood out fairly readily although I always find them more difficult when they run right to left and though I have no idea what an ELLIPTICAL is, or why you'd have CABLES in a gym, I was able to uncover them based purely on the fact that the options were so limited by that late stage.
