    Description:
From star-studded murder mysteries to returning superhero shows, theres
    plenty to watch this weekend.

    FULL STORY ======================================================================

Halloween has come and gone for another year, so its no surprise to see streamers dusting off the cobwebs and offering a much more varied slate of
new movies and TV shows to enjoy this weekend.

Thats not to say the next few days are completely free of frights, mind. Netflixs new World War II series, All the Light We Cannot See , has its fair share of grisly drama, while Hulus A Haunting in Venic e centers on another typically gruesome Agatha Christie murder. Prime Videos Invincible returns
for more X-rated superhero action, too.

Below, youll find our pick of the best new movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix , Prime Video , Disney Plus and more this weekend. All the Light We Cannot See (Netflix)

Arriving an entire year after its original scheduled premiere date, All the Light We Cannot See is now streaming on Netflix.

This four-episode adaptation of Anthony Doerr's Pulitzer Prize-winning WWII novel centers on a blind French teenager (Aria Mia Loberti) whose path collides with a young German soldier (Louis Hofmann) in Nazi-occupied France. The series traces the pairs story across multiple decades, with different actors appearing throughout.

Despite its esteemed production team (Shawn Levy and Steven Knight) and star-studded cast (Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, and more), All the Light We Cannot See hasnt been too well-received by critics so far. That said, the quality of the series source material suggests it could still count among the best Netflix shows of the year.

Now available to stream on Netflix. A Haunting in Venice (Hulu)

Kenneth Branagh returns as mustached Belgian detective Hercule Poirot in A Haunting in Venice , the actor-directors third adaptation of an Agatha Christie mystery (after Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile ).

Based on Christies Halloween Party novel, Branaghs latest feature finds
Poirot once again compelled to solve the case of a murdered young woman, this time at an eerie sance in post-World War II Venice (he sure knows where to find trouble).

Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey and Kelly Reilly all star alongside Branagh in A Haunting in Venice , which is now available to stream on Hulu.
UK viewers will have to wait a few more weeks for the films debut on Disney Plus.

Now available to stream on Hulu. Invincible season 2 (Prime Video)

Prime Videos blood-spattered superhero series, Invincible , returns for its highly-anticipated second season this weekend.

New episodes find Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and his mom, Debbie (Sandra Oh), struggling to move on after the events of Invincible s season 1 finale (which we wont spoil here, in the interest of newcomers). Grayson reckons with the possibility that he could become as brutally authoritarian as his dad, the all-powerful Omni-man, while the titular superhero must also ward off a host of new threats.

Invincible season 2 is releasing in two parts read our interview with co-showrunner Simon Racioppa to find out why and Prime Videos intention with the series (which is already one of the best Prime Video shows ) is to craft
a bolder and more grounded multiverse than Marvel and DC . In other words, Invincible could (and should) be your next superhero obsession, if it isnt already.

Now available to stream on Prime Video. Blue Eye Samurai (Netflix)

Sticking with the theme of gore-heavy animated shows, Blue Eye Samurai begins streaming on Netflix this weekend.

This eight-episode series which comes from husband and wife writing duo Michael Green and Amber Noizumi follows a young warrior on a bloody quest
for revenge in Edo-period Japan. Maya Erskine, Kenneth Branagh, Stephanie
Hsu, Brenda Song and George Takei are among the shows voice cast.

Suffice to say, critics loved Blue Eye Samurai . The series has been
described as exhilarating and a must-watch, with particular praise going towards its gorgeous, gory fight scenes. FYI: this isnt one to watch with the kids.

Now available to stream on Netflix. Fingernails (Apple TV Plus)

Having also released in theaters this weekend, new sci-fi romance Fingernails is now streaming on Apple TV Plus.

This Black Mirror -style movie is set in an alternate world in which a
machine (built by the Love Institute) can accurately determine whether two people are in love by, uhh, prying a fingernail from each person. But when Anna gets a job at said institute, her pre-approved relationship (and thus
the accuracy of said machine) is called into question by a new love interest.

Riz Ahmed, Luke Wilson, Annie Murphy and Jeremy Allen White also star in Fingernails , which critics have described as moving and convincing as a case for romantic anxiety (cheery!).

Now available to stream on Apple TV Plus. Nyad (Netflix)

The second of this weekends streaming-but-also-theatrical releases is Nyad on Netflix.

This true-story sports drama follows long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad
(Annette Bening) as she attempts at the age of 60, no less to become the first swimmer to make the 110-mile ocean journey from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage.

Jodie Foster and Rhys Ifans star alongside Bening in this new Netflix movie , which comes from the Oscar-winning directors of Free Solo , Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.

Now available to stream on Netflix. Quiz Lady (Hulu, Disney Plus)

Booksmart fans, listen up: Quiz Lady , a new comedy produced by Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum, is now streaming on Hulu in the US and Disney Plus in the UK.

This Jessica Yu-directed movie centers on a dysfunctional family that seeks
to raise much-needed cash by winning a quiz-based game show. Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, Jason Schwartzman, Tony Hale and Ferrell himself all star.

Critics have praised Awkwafina and Sandra Ohs hilarious chemistry in what is
a refreshingly low-concept comedy, so this might just be one of 2023s best Hulu movies .

Now available to stream on Hulu in the US and Disney Plus in the UK.

7 new movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, and more this weekend (July 19)

    Date:
    Fri, 19 Jul 2024 14:00:00 +0000

    Description:
From 1960s thrillers and historical epics, to the return of fan-favorite Netflix shows, theres plenty to watch this weekend.

    FULL STORY ======================================================================

Some of our most-anticipated new movies and shows have arrived just in time for the weekend. The headline TV shows include the return of our favorite dojo-based series Cobra Kai on Netflix , the premiere of historical epic
Those About to Die on Peacock (or, if you're watching internationally, Prime Video ) and new 1960s thriller Lady in the Lake on Apple TV Plus .

We've also picked out two sports-related documentaries in the run-up to the Olympics: the first is a four-part series on Netflix about the legendary gymnast Simone Biles called Simone Biles Rising, while the other is a biopic about the late Olympic champion Gertrude Ederle on Disney Plus .

Rounding out our list of recommendations is the latest season of the reality dating show Too Hot to Handle on Netflix, alongside the Marvel TV show animation Hit-Monkey on Hulu . Not sure where you should start? Find out more about the biggest new shows and movies on the best streaming services below. Those About to Die (Peacock/Prime Video)

"Are you not entertained!?", Maximus Decimus Meridius shouted at a crowd of coliseum-based patrons in 2000 historical epic Gladiator . We certainly were (and still are 24-years on) but, if you thought you'd be similarly engrossed in Those About to Die , a new historical drama available to stream on Peacock (US) and Prime Video (internationally), you might want to rein in your expectations.

Why? Well, while we suggested Those About to Die 's first trailer made it
look like a spicy meeting of minds between Game of Thrones and Gladiator , reviewers claim it's anything but. Billed as a series with "obvious limitations" and an "increasingly dull" narrative, this Anthony Hopkins-led drama should be consigned to the history books. Don't expect to see it on our best Prime Video shows list anytime soon, then. Cobra Kai season 6 (Netflix)

Sensei and students of the Cobra Kai dojo are returning to our screens once more to train for the world championship of karate in Cobra Kai season 6 .
The Sekai Taikai tournament is set to be the epic final showdown that fans of the hit series have been waiting for since seeing early trailers of one of
the best Netflix shows' final outing.

While it's sad news that this season will be its last, the show is going to
go out with a bang as there are a whopping 15 episodes to get through that will be released in three parts. The first five dropped on Thursday, July 18, and are available to stream this weekend, but you'll have to wait until November 15 for the next batch to kick off. If you're already twiddling your thumbs, then here are three similar shows that pack a punch to stream while you wait. Lady in the Lake (Apple TV Plus)

Natalie Portmans new Apple TV Plus show Lady in the Lake sees her star as Maddie Schwartz, an affluent Jewish housewife in 1960s Baltimore whose life fatally collides with Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), a Black mother juggling three jobs, when a young girl goes missing at the Thanksgiving Day parade.

The thriller, which has been adapted from a book originally penned by Laura Lippman, has only just landed on the streaming service and its already received rave reviews. The Guardian wrote: This fearless, 60s-set thriller is astonishingly written and acted. Its so sumptuous that its brilliance threatens to overwhelm you. Were sure its a worthy contender for our best Apple TV Plus shows list and if you manage to watch it all this weekend, here are three more shows on the streamer with 86% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes. Too Hot to Handle season 6 (Netflix)

Too Hot to Handle isnt your average dating show. Yes, theres attractive singles hooking up in a villa, but their idea of paradise soon shatters when theyre forbidden from kissing or engaging in any sexual acts. If they break the rules, everyone pays the price as money is deducted from the $100,000 prize pool.

If its explosive drama and addictive entertainment youre looking to watch
this weekend, then Too Hot to Handle season six is available to watch on Netflix. Simone Biles Rising (Netflix)

The legendary gymnast Simone Biles documents her mental health struggles
after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and her triumphant return to the 2024 Paris Olympics in this inspiring Netflix documentary Simone Biles Rising.

Variety said the four-part docuseries is "an elegantly paced and vulnerable account that infuses the history of gymnastics with Biles personal legacy which has been hard-won but mesmerizing to watch. Currently sitting at a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, not only does Biles win a place in our hearts, but
her docuseries seems like a gold medal-winning future addition to our best Netflix documentaries guide. Hit-Monkey season 2 (Hulu)

Marvels hitman monkey and sidekick ghost are back on Hulu (or Disney Plus if you're streaming internationally) this week. Its been two years since the hit animation series first aired but in that time the show has built up a loyal following with generally positive reviews it's sitting with an 82% score on the Tomatometer, which warrants a place on our best Hulu shows list.

Like its protagonist Japanese macaque, the show has been a force to be reckoned with, surviving being cancelled after Marvel TV shutdown in 2020 and managing to secure a renewal despite its sister Marvel show's cancellation . In season two, we're no longer in the snowy mountains of Tokyo but New York City, where Monkey (Fred Tatasciore) and Bryce (Jason Sudeikis) are looking
to escape a life of killing and find redemption. Can this unlikely duo escape a world of apes and assassins? Young Woman and the Sea (Disney Plus)

Star Wars alumnus Daisy Ridley continues to rebuild her reputation after the mixed reception to the iconic sci-fi franchise's sequel movie trilogy with this heartfelt and crowd-pleasing period drama that wears its female empowerment badge on its sleeve.

In it, Ridley plays Gertrude 'Trudy' Ederle, who attempted to become the
first woman to swim all 21 miles of the English Channel. Along the way, her efforts to break new ground are constantly met with obstacles, not least from a patriarchal society that claims the fairer sex couldn't possibly achieve such a feat.

A beautifully shot and thematically dense flick, Young Woman and the Sea is a powerhouse of a film that deserves far more recognition than it has earned thus far. A worthy inclusion on our best Disney Plus movies when we update it next, it deserves to be.

From the return of hit Netflix shows to Prime Video's new spy thriller
series, here's what's worth watching this weekend.

    FULL STORY ======================================================================

It's that time of the week again. No matter how busy or relaxing the past
five working days have been for you, it's time to kick back and watch
numerous new movies and TV shows that have recently debuted on the world's best streaming services .

There's plenty to check out on Netflix , too, with the return of hit shows in Arcane and Outer Banks , plus the debut of Netflix's first holiday season
film of 2024 (yes, they're releasing earlier each year). If you're not signed up to Netflix , though, we come bearing gifts from three of its streaming rivals as well, so you'll find something entertaining to watch before Monday arrives. Enjoy! Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter Arcane season 2 (Netflix)

I love Arcane . Ask anyone who I work alongside, or my family and friends,
and they'll all claim that there isn't a bigger fan of Netflix's first League of Legends animated adaptation than I.

Almost exactly three years after one of the best Netflix shows ' first season absolutely blew me away, its follow-up's highly-anticipated and long overdue debut is upon us. Arcane season 2 is finally here, and I've never been
happier for one of my all-time favorite series to return. Before you watch
it, check out my Arcane season 2 review to see me wax lyrical about how utterly gorgeous, action-packed, melodramatically soul-crushing, and epic it is. Be sure to visit our Arcane tag page , too, because there's lots of exclusive content from my recent chat with co-creator Christian Linke that's worth reading.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to watch season 2 act 1, aka its first
three chapters, for the third time this week.

Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter Watch Arcane season 2 on Netflix Outer Banks season 4 part 2 (Netflix)

We already know Outer Banks has been renewed for season 5 and that it'll be the final outing . Thankfully, we're not done with season 4 yet, and the second part is finally here. You've no doubt been quietly cursing them after episode 5's shocking finale, too indeed, if you think ending a two-part season on a cliffhanger is cruel, you're not alone!

Don't worry, though, you'll get all the answers (we hope!) in part 2, which has five more episodes to devour. While we haven't had to wait quite as long as some gaps between episodes (I'm still frustrated about the wait for Severance season 2, just saying), you'll be forgiven for wanting to cancel your weekend plans and find out what happens next. I'm not judging.

Lucy Buglass, senior entertainment writer Watch Outer Banks season 4 part 2 on Netflix The Old Man season 2 (Disney Plus)

If you're from the US, you'll likely have seen that The Old Man season 2 is already out on Hulu . For the rest of us, who've been patiently waiting to
see what the next installment of the thriller series has in store, we'll finally be able to this weekend as the whole season was made available on Disney Plus on November 6.

Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes reveal season 2 doesn't have a similarly high critical rating as season 1 did, but that shouldn't stop you from finding out what happens next to Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges). The first season earned a
place on our best Hulu shows list for its thrilling story and Bridges' compelling performance, and there's even talk of a third season on the cards, according to Variety . Will there be one last mission? We wouldn't put it
past Chase to take on another.

Amelia Schwanke, senior entertainment editor Watch The Old Man season 2 on Disney Plus (internationally) Meet Me Next Christmas (Netflix)

Christmas has certainly come early with one of November's new Netflix movies Meet Me Next Christmas. The festive rom-com sees Layla (Christina Milian)
race across New York City to find a ticket to a sold-out Pentatonix Christmas Eve concert to reconnect with the man of her dreams.

Milian is no stranger to Netflix's romance section with movies like Falling Inn Love and Resort to Love, so it's bound to be a charming affair with her
as the lead. While we wait and see if Meet Me Next Christmas becomes one of the best Netflix movies , I can't wait to kick off the holiday season with this feel-good rom-com.

Grace Morris, entertainment writer Watch Meet Me Next Christmas on Netflix Citadel: Honey Bunny (Prime Video)

Some of the best Prime Video shows and best Prime Video movies a re action packed, and Citadel: Honey Bunny has the potential to join our line-up of recommended action hits. Not only that, but it's a spin-off to mainline show Citadel , which my colleague Tom Power wasn't a fan of upon its debut in
April 2023 . The spin-off is directly linked, too, as the two main characters here are spoilers! the parents of Chopra's character Nadia, so expect
    plenty of backstory.

There are two separate timelines, swapping between 1992 and 2000, picking up with Bunny, a stuntman in films, who recruits a struggling actor Honey for a side gig that endangers her life. The six-part series will focus on their relationship and Nadia's early life, so it's a must watch if you need more Citadel in your life.

Lucy Buglass, senior entertainment writer Watch Citadel: Honey Bunny on
Prime Video My Old Ass (Prime Video)

My Old Ass is the latest collaboration between LuckyChap and Amazon MGM Studios, and following the movie's standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, I have high hopes for one of November's new Prime Video movies . The studios have previously worked together on Saltburn and
are co-producing The Sims movie next, so I'm excited to see how their latest project turned out as it sounds like another wild trip.

No, really. The plot for this coming-of-age comedy involves a mushroom trip, which is the catalyst for a sci-fi scenario where an 18-year-old Elliott (Maisy Stella) suddenly comes face-to-face with her 39-year-old future self (Aubrey Plaza). You can expect plenty of epiphanies to come next as you
follow Elliott on this heartfelt journey of discovery as she prepares to
leave home. Make sure to check in on our best Prime Video movies guide to see if it makes the cut.

Amelia Schwanke, senior entertainment editor Watch My Old Ass on Prime Video The Day of the Jackal (Peacock)

The Day of the Jackal , which is already out on Sky in the UK, is a modern day reimagining of Frederick Forsyth's 1971 novel of the same name. In this cat-and-mouse thriller, Eddie Redmayne ( The Theory of Everything ) stars as the steely contract killer hired to assassinate a powerful tech tycoon.
Trying to put an end to his killing spree is MI6 agent Bianca (Lashana Lynch)
but can she stop him before it's too late?

If Oscar-winning actor Redmayne and the captivating Lynch ( No Time to Die ) wasn't enough to have me tune in to this action-packed killer thriller, the rave reviews certainly will. The Standard wrote that The Day of the Jackal is "slick, stylish, and cinematically cool" and that "Redmayne is at his most enigmatic in the role of a chilly killer in this breathless thriller series." Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to watch this series and I most certainly accept.

    Description:
Two new shows, one of which is the long awaited sequel to Netflix's biggest
TV Original, lead our festive week recommendations.

    FULL STORY ======================================================================

It's been a packed year of great TV shows and new movies , so much so I'm still working through my watchlist! But, as 2024 draws to a close, there are plenty of new releases to tide us over till the new year. It seems the best streaming services aren't slowing down one bit, with some of this year's most highly-anticipated returning series and Christmas specials still to come.

There might not be any leftover turkey in the fridge, but that shouldn't stop you from watching the best Doctor Who Christmas specials after this week's latest installment. For even more streaming recommendations, make sure to
also check out these seven underrated movies in 2024 and nine canceled
Netflix shows in 2024 to round out this year's watchlist with some of the lesser known hits, too! - Amelia Schwanke, senior entertainment editor Squid Game season 2 (Netflix)

The wait is over! Squid Game season 2 is here and Netflix is inviting us to dive back into the deadly trials this holiday season. I've been excited about this for so long as I was among the millions of viewers who tuned into last time and was myself absolutely blown away by it. Set three years after the original, protagonist Seong Gi-hun decides to go back into the games instead of running off with his prize money. It's not a decision everyone would make, admittedly, but he's donning his Player 456 tracksuit once again.

I can't ignore my excitement for Squid Game 's return anymore, so it's definitely a show I'll be binge watching over the holidays. It's high time
one of the best Netflix shows returned, after all!

Lucy Buglass, senior entertainment writer Doctor Who: Joy to the World (Disney Plus)

Ever since Doctor Who was rebooted in 2005, the British sci-fi institution
has become synonymous with the festive season. Indeed, we've been treated to
a new holiday special every year (well, almost every year) since then and, thankfully 2024 is no different.

Joy to the World , which will air on Disney Plus everywhere except in the UK (it'll launch on BBC One/BBC iPlayer) on Christmas Day, will follow the eponymous Time Lord and new temporary companion Joy ( Bridgerton 's Nicola Coughlan) as they explore the Time Hotel. Doctor Who festive specials have been hit and miss over the years, and I hope this one is more of the former than the latter.

Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter What If...? season 3 (Disney Plus)

The final season of What If...? , the first animated TV show from Marvel, is already airing as we speak. Like its forebear, new episodes of season 3 have been dropping daily since December 22, so you've already got five to catch up on (if you're reading this on December 27, anyway) with this Marvel Phase 5
    TV show.

So far, I've largely enjoyed the stories that What If...? season 3 has told, but I'll always feel like the MCU project was something of a missed opportunity for the comic giant. Indeed, considering the premise of this series and its comic book namesake, it could've been a wilder and more creative affair. Alas, it isn't and it's for that reason that it'll never be part of our best Disney Plus shows guide.

Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter Your Fault (Prime Video)

My Fault (Culpa ma) might not be considered one of the best Prime Video movies , but soapy young adult dramas are a guilty pleasure of mine , so I'll be watching the sequel Your Fault (Culpa tuya). Based on the Culpables book series by Mercedes Ron, the Spanish-language romantic drama sees Noah (Nicole Wallace) and Nick's (Gabriel Guevara) passionate romance face new challenges as Noah heads off to college and Nick starts his career.

The first movie became the most-watched non-English-language film on Prime Video in 2023, so I wouldn't be surprised if the second one is as popular among viewers.

Grace Morris, entertainment writer ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chiefs Clothing (Prime Video)

Being a well-recognized sports fan is probably a pretty cool experience, and that's exactly what Xaviar Babudar, aka ChiefsAholic, was, with people in the above trailer comparing him to a god. Well, until he was unmasked as a bank robber, that is. Yeah this story is a pretty crazy one and I'm very keen to watch it!

When ChiefsAholic was arrested in Bixby, Oklahoma, it unraveled a series of bank robberies committed across the Midwest and opened up a secret life. His arrest is documented through his own interviews and the legal journey that followed as we find out how this internet sensation robbed 11 banks stealing more than $800,000 across seven states and laundering the proceeds through casinos. Even if you're not big on NFL, this story is wild and perfect for those who love a crazy true story. One for our best Prime Video shows list? Potentially.

Lucy Buglass, senior entertainment writer NFL on Christmas Day (Netflix)

The wait for the the NFLs big Christmas Day marquee games that'll see the Kansas City Chiefs (who won The Super Bowl LVIII) face the Pittsburgh Steelers, plus the Baltimore Ravens against the Houston Texans, ended this week, when Netflix subscribers were treated to a Christmas gift with both games live streaming on December 25.

To top it off, Mariah Carey kicked off proceedings with her Christmas staple before Beyonc stole the halftime show with her first live performance of tracks from the 'Cowboy Carter' album. According to Nielsen data , both games became the most-streamed in NFL history with each having an average audience of 24 million viewers. Go sports!

Amelia Schwanke, senior entertainment editor Alien Files: Reopened (Max)

Alien Files: Reopened , which has landed on Max , investigates 75 years of UFO phenomena as investigators try to find the truth behind well-known cases through forensic analysis. With the help from a team of experts, they uncover who's behind government disinformation, fake abduction stories, and the infiltration of the UFO community. This series challenges perceptions,
leaving audiences trying to work out who and what they can trust.

I've never watched an alien docuseries before, but maybe it's time I give one a try . I still don't expect it to make it onto our best Max shows list, mind you...
