As I was writing some birthday thank you letters, I had the sudden thought
that not many people write letters to each other. Of course, writing about
this on a BBS sounds odd, though it feels similar (maybe it is the lack of distractions). Here's a question: When was the last time you wrote a letter?

On a personal level, that must be like almost 30 years ago, writing with a vacation friend for a few years. That was nice (and before bbs'ing and the interwebs.

I used to do it fairly often. Excluding holiday/birthday cards, the last letter I wrote may have been to a friend in the service, or to another friend in Brazil. So probably 25-30 years ago, before everyone got email and then phones with text messaging.

Back during the Soviet era, I had a cousin stationed at the West German
border with East Germany. I wrote to him pretty regular... as a youngster,
I was facinated by having a relative so close to the Iron Curtain. ;)

i think letter writing and cards shows that the person put some effort in.
I still save all my cards from everyone.
I don't get any cards anymore because those people died off and nobody else writes.

Yes, I only get christmas cards now from one of my sisters, who sends

I don't even think email is used much any more in that regard. People prefer to

send messages over social media these days.

That said, email has become a bit more common in the "Indie Web" movement on the clearnet. Most sites on Neocities have an email you can send messages to, and if I really like their site, I send them an email telling them so, and what's so cool about it! From experience of receiving such emails myself, I know they mean a lot!

As for written letters, it's been so long since I did that. I get RSI whenever I write too much, so even back then I tend to avoid it.
You know, writing this messages has reminded me that I have a typewriter somewhere. I think it would be cool to use that to write some messages to people. Maybe one day if I met anyone down to be penpals with me!

I think it more common these days that people come back to blogs. Usually techies and it's more headless (e.g. Hugo) with MD as a source format for posts, then some plugin integrations to get the static website generated and uploaded on top of that. Perhaps this is just a temporary fashion and more about learning new ways how to manage content with more technical capability built into the process, but still, there is something happening and people like

I think a lot of people are focusing on branding, and having a place of
your own to SEO when they look up your name doesn't hurt.

I work in technology, and I have a tech blog that comes up when you
look up my name, since one of the first things a prospective employer
