Bright Star Rigel (evening)
Rigel or Beta Orionis is the hot blue-white star sitting to the lower right
(or southwest) of Orion's belt. In Arabic, Rigel means "the Foot of the Great One". Despite being located much farther away from the sun (about 860 light- years) than Betelgeuse, magnitude 0.15 Rigel is approximately the same visual brightness as that red star - meaning that high-luminosity Rigel emits considerably more visible light than Betelgeuse. Rigel is an aging supergiant star with a surface temperature of 11,000 K. In a quality telescope, a small companion star can be spotted very close to Rigel.
