    Greetings all,
    A new year and a new garden to plan. This season though will require some overhaul. The garden to date is raised bed made from salvaged plywood in a "shaker@ style. It's worked well but time to replace the wood. I'm thinking non wood alternatives and wondering if there's any experience out there for/against particular materials. Composites look good, even metal is an option.

    Here we used wooden fence palings and and some some 2 x 2 for the corners and bracing... it worked well to create a raised bed. We made two and have topped them up with some earth and then the top third using compost. They are roughly 1.8 meters long x 1 meter high and around 60cm wide.

    They work well, and we can get a lot of produce out of them without havings to do any bending etc.

    I've seen where people use cement board in place of wood, doesn't look bad. I'm still using wood here as well.

    Expanding a bit this year and put in about a 25 foot bed along the outside of my back fence (chain link) for flowering vines, snow peas, etc. Doubly duty as hopefully it'll help keep my dog from digging underneath the other side.

    I've got the bed done and some soil in, just need to add some manure and seed it.

    Had to take a quick break. Little bit of work and my darned hips are killing me.

    No kidding cement board, that's an interesting idea.

    Here's we're still pretty much winter mode in NY. the suns coming back and the daylight savings will steal dawn from me before I know it! Folklore says you don't plant till after the apple blossoms fall and even then it's just the hearty stuff. This climate change stuff will force me to seek garden saying from the Carolinas!
    Here we ran an external boarder for vining and other flowers as a buffer. The deer like to hang over and sometimes jump the fence. The best of late was mice eating all my sweet potatos as they lay in the ground. We didn't harvest till first frost and it was just the skins left in place!
    This reminds me I've got grey squirrels to deal with. The Mrs said make get rid of them. I haven't been ordered to sanction the rodents like that since the year they ruined her strawberry patch!
