Gamgee, I am forced to wonder how much your interaction (among others) with
him is affecting his participation. Not to be insulting, but you're not
exactly a friendly person, sometimes. And you were pretty hard on TM just before he started his current paradigm (as he was leaving DOVEnet, iirc). Perhaps he feels that this is the only 'safe' way he can contribute?

Meanwhile, as others have said, these one-line questions have sparked good conversations in the past and, I expect, in the future too. Why criticize someone for that?

As always, take my comments with as many grains of salt as your doctor would allow. I am definitely not speaking for TM, nor do I have any idea what he's actually thinking.

I used to like Monopoly when I was younger because you could play with money, but as an adult, the game is lacking. It's usually obvious before the end who is winning, and when you're winning, people just give up. The game rarely goes to completion.

I do like the Doom boardgame, Cluedo (what we call Clue in Australia) is pretty good. I don't actually have many boardgames.

The problem with Monopoly is that all the strategy and politics necessary to win are done very early on, and then players just move round and round and round for hours no end.

By the first half an hour everybody has all the properties they can get and has traded them with other players if possible. Past that point there is no more strategy. Just mindlessly wandering on the board.

Also, it has player elimination, which is ok for short games but awful for long ones. If Francisco is kicked out early, then he may have to have a long nap while the rest of the players keep at it having fun. If it can be called fun :-)

I never heard of the Doom boardgame.

it can be called fun :-)

Very true! My first 'post Monopoly' game was Settlers of Catan (now just called Catan). There is still an obvious 'leader,' but at least no player elimination, so everyone is in it until the end...

Same with Ticket to Ride! And I think both (especially ticket) is GREAT for
    a gateway game...

I never heard of the Doom boardgame.

I've heard of it, but never played it. Wasn't a DOOM fan on the computer either. :-)

My understanding is it's a lot like the game Imperial Assault - one
versus many. I really like IA, and wish I had people to play a

own children we played trivia games, card games and some computer games.

The problem with Monopoly is that all the strategy and politics
necessary to win are done very early on, and then players just move
round and round and round for hours no end.

By the first half an hour everybody has all the properties they can get and has traded them with other players if possible. Past that point
there is no more strategy. Just mindlessly wandering on the board.

Also, it has player elimination, which is ok for short games but awful
for long ones. If Francisco is kicked out early, then he may have to
have a long nap while the rest of the players keep at it having fun. If
it can be called fun :-)

I never heard of the Doom boardgame.

I still find it fun, but I haven't played in a while. Also, the start of monopoly is pointless. You go round and round to collect properties. The best strategy is to always buy the property you land on at the start, so really, it is just a very long winded way of distributing properties randomly. You could just hand out the cards at random at the start and skip the many rounds where nothing significant happens. Who cares about the $2 rent. Also later on, when you have houses and hotels, people tend not to worry about paying that $15 rent, as those transactions are insignificant.

The more you think about it, the more you realise how flawed it is.

But Monopoly was likely based on a game called The Landlords Game, a game designed to promote Georgism and show how property can be used to build a monopoly, which leads to unfairness. The game actually was DESIGNED to suck! The point of the Landlords Game was to how how holding a monopoly, or being propertied gave someone an advantage, and how those with less could never compete. When people get irate, give up at having to keep playing against the guy who has 3 sets when they have no hope of getting into a position to negotiate for one, that is the point of the game. To show how unfair the tax/economic system is.

There are two modes of play. The first is one player controls the demons, and up to three others try to make it through a scenario alive, fighting the demons as they spawn. Like the computer game, you collect weapons, ammo, keys and try to progress through the level. The "demon master" as I call them, tries to get them killed.

the second is multiplayer, where people move and fight each other, in deathmatch or I think capture the flag as well.

Catan is fine but I much prefer Ticket to Ride as a gateway game, to the point I still play Ticket to Ride from time to time, but I never pull Catan.

The main issue I have with Catan is that nobody will ever trade with me, even if I have something somebody else desperately needs and I am the only guy who has it. Not a problem with the game, but it really sucks :-) The politics in the game make everybody either play as hypocrites pretending to do you a favor while they build an engine to close your routes on the board, or to play as sharks openly.

Catan is fine but it has a lot of potential for players to get locked. It is easy to place yourself into a corner from which you have no room to keep building so I'd rather play it with people with the brain agility needed to recognize that, even if they are noobs. If your players are smart enough to not letting themselves be locked then it is a good time.

I don't have that problem with Ticket to Ride. It has its issues when played RAW without expansions, but you can have any random dude understand the game and make meaningful moves in no time. It has some strategic space baked in ("Should I place a railway? Should I pick this ticket? Should I pick an Engine even if it means I don't get to pick an extra card?") but it is not gigantic, which helps a lot if you play with newbies or if your group has had too much bourbon.

How old are your kids, if they are still kids?

I just had a game of Through the Ages which prolonged itself into 4 am. The guy to my left started a revolution in his own country to impose Communism and then elected Bill Gates as its Dear Leader.

My country imposed an Islamic Theocracy ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte, built a massive tank army, and trashed his Operas :-)

This does not happen in mainstream games :-P

Sounds like fun. My kids are all adults now. My youngest is 22. But, we
all still like to play games, just have not in a while. Pandemic kind of interrupted things, but I think it's about time to get back to it! :-) I
would be surprised though if my kids had the attention span to play that
long. LOL. I myself have a hard time playing a game for real long, which
is why I'm not a computer gamer - unless you count solitaire, Bejeweled
and puzzle games like those. :-)

If they are 22, you can put out the heavy artillery and play the real heavy games if you want to :-)

Somebody here has suggested some fine gateway games which are a good middle ground between mainstream board games and monsters such as Scythe. Some more options for quick games would be:

Citadels (very fast, not fiddly components)
Carcassone (fast to set up and play, lots of strategic space in relation to the low complexity of the game)
Azul (Fast, beautiful presentation, sinple mechanics)
    Sagrada (see above)

Those are all so good that even my group of boardgaming sharks still plays them.

We used to have Buccaneer kicking around in my youth. Not overly
complicated, collect treasure and crew, attack other players ships and raid their home port. Collect some amount of loot to win. Its fairly old
whatever its origin, my granparents had a copy with a huge rolled paper map, although the one we had was a more "normal" board sized thing.

Nice work on that art. However, I don't think we need to resort to weapons of mass piety...at least not yet... (o_-)

Weapons of Mass Piety, OMG, that is great. I was just thinking how religion is used as control for the masses. It is sad (or maybe hilarious) that I found much humor in the statement and ASCII art.
