If that RPi is a model 3B or higher, you can configure it to boot from
an external (USB-attached) hard drive (or SSD). No SD card required,
and no SD card to fail.
I did exactly that :) I am using a cheap Kingston SSD, but i hope it
will last longer than any SDCARD.
The BBS is online again :)
Thank you for the suggestion.

In time I need to suss this as well.

The SDCARD on the RPi hosting the BBS has corrupted again, so the
BBS is down for the time being. It's the second time that is
happening in a short while, so i am thinking of using an old
netbook i have, for the BBS.
So it may take a while to get the BBS online again, because of
other things too, but eventually i will manage to get it online.
In the mean time, i will visit more BBSes ;)

I've kept my SD card, but I mount it read only, and all of the
BBS stuff runs on a SSD. If the SD dies, it's easily restored by
writing the backup to a new SD card and swapping over.

A reasonable workaround, but why not eliminate the SD completely, and boot/run only on the SSD... ?

I could, but I have found advantages to this separation, namely
that backups (especially of the OS itself) are easier in some
ways.

Hmmmm... OK. If it works for you, sounds good! Cheers.

More than one way to skin a cat :)

Hoping you'll manage to restore things from backup or similar! I believe therewas some discussion previously regarding possible ways to increase the lifespan of SD cards, but it is a recurring issue to many, it
seems...
I always have a backup. The last one was some days old, so only a few stuff got lost, but i can retrieve them.
Thankfully the 3B(+) can boot from USB, so i purchased an external SSD and... bye bye... SDCARDS... :)

Absolutely! If we were all the same, things would be exceedingly
boring! ;-)
... Pity the poor corpuscle, for he labours in vein.
