I am planning a US cross country road trip with my wife and teenage daughter this summer. I live in California and heading to see some friends in Kentucky.
I am planning around 3 weeks on the road with a majority of it being hotel stays.

If you were going on a cross country road trip where would you stop, and what would you do there? Looking for some good ideas or memories you may have.

Canada. If you've all got passports, you should consider a northern routh. The Trans-Canada Highway is an absolutely beautiful drive...

I have heard they have nice gun festivals in North Creek (Kentucky), with
flame thrower contests and everything. Those sounds like a fun time but they are kind of far away from my home.

I believe that is actually *Knob* Creek Gun Range which, IIRC, is near Fort Knox.

There could also be a North Creek but I have not heard of it.

I cannot recommend anything because I have not done it yet, but I one day
plan a similar trip in reverse. Go out to California on Historic US 66,
and come back this way on US 60.

I will be interested in hearing about your travels.

If you plan on traveling near US 66, there are probably some good places
to visit and stay mentioned on the US 66 websites. I have so far only
traveled 66 in Illinois which, if you are coming to Kentucky from
California will be out of your way.

Been there for one of their machine gun shoots. That was an awesome experience, especially if you stay for the night shoot where they have tannerite and tracers.

Last time I checked, there was an actual North Creek.

I learnt of it from a Spanish documentary that attempted to show how evil Americans are so it would not surprise me if they messed up and mixed North with Knob.

The gun festivals looked quite cool.

I suppose it depends on where you're driving. Because Canada's province of Ontario dips down more south of some US locations (Windsor, ON is more south than Minneapolis, MN or Burlington, VT for example) it's sometimes quicker/shorter to cut through Canada. Before June 2009 you didn't need a passport to enter the US from Canada (or vice-versa), just a driver's license or birth certificate which made impromptu trips across the border easier.

I have some in-laws that live "down east" in/on Prince Edward Island. I can get there going through Canada (~1810km) or through the US as well (~1815km).

For awhile it was faster to go through the US when a lot of the highways were under construction in and around Montreal.
