I'm so keen to try this out.

Spectre, by my rough calculations you are 20 klm from me, but from the things network map, we would be way closer to a gateway (with one in Carrum Downs and Moorabbin). I dont know if it is even possible, but Id like to have a go. If it works, I'd even buy the kit to run a gateway and run my own lora server - but that may not help you/me specifically.

I guess I'd know when I get a dongle of some sort and it appears on the things network.

I think devkits appear on the serial interface - so hooked up to a Pi should work well.

YEah the few I saw answer to AT commands, but no further info... I have no
idea what kind of propogation/range 915Mhz per W is. I can only presume its going to be a lot better than 2.4, also no idea how reliant on LOS its going
to be, or what kind o' tenna might help for extra range...

Getting radio to you, 2200klm away is something I have no experience with (and so no idea where to begin), but maybe there are folks here that know, or technology in the future that enables it...

There must be ways to piggy back off of musk's satellites for example ;)

We're waiting patiently for the FSX CubeSat to come online. :P

I should have a look at the proffered web site but I haven't yet...so I have
to ask up front, is it using 2.4 or 5 gigglyhurts? If 2.4 I have a supply of antennae that might be useful. 20Km in the scheme of things ought to be bridgable but LOS (line o' site) is going to be a problem. I'm highly

Hmm ~915Mhz I see the odd USB based interface otherwise modules for things
like Pi/duino kind of setups.. this is way outside my regular wheelhouse, but I'm open to have a go at it.. I haven't seen any kind of "software" support
as yet..

Neither, in AU its 915Mhz.

If you couldnt make Carrum (I'd be connecting to Moorabbin if not you directly - not even sure if that is how it works) - then we're probably out of the woods before we start :(

There's probably radio "rules" that I'm not too familiar with either. I think in AU there is a dwell time and duty cycle rules (I did see them somewhere), so not sure if those rules makes it a no-go from the start..)

Yeah, I'm google-ing around and the SX1276 chip comes up a lot.

I think devkits appear on the serial interface - so hooked up to a Pi should work well.

While a bit exy, I'm not sure if something like this will cut it:

ive been aware and sort of loosely keeping an eye on lorawan for a while now and daydreaming about how cool it would be to use it to create a low cost RF based network by which message packets generated by bbs could be shared ..
and bypassing a reliance on any isp.

i was also day dreaming about how this could scale into a much larger decentralised network of systems

There are a couple of lora gateways in Dunedin, and so while it isnt or wont be an alternative connectivity option (strickly speaking) - it might be good enough to test the waters and see if it works.

I might just bite the bullet and buy something and see if I can connect to my gateway, which is about 6.5klm away (or spin up a gateway).

Hmm, yep revisiting their page on the Things Network site it looks like our Polytechnic is active or was in that space, the updates are about 2 years
old. What's annoying is the gateway coverage just falls short of where I live (based on the mapping data shown).

I may contact the chap at the polytech when I understand all of this a little more, it's been a wee while since I looked at it. But last night read more of the threads you had shared and found it all rather interesting :)

Well HF is the only way I can think of doing it, some digital modes there perhaps. It may be good to move the thread to FSX_HAM in/when we want to suss options there.

Locally out 70cm repeater that runs on 915Mhz will cover most of our city
from it's elevated height. I'd need to revisit the specs they run that unit
on.
