I think we are all going through the same thing. There are work things that I'm supposed to be doing, but finding the motivation when WFH all
the time is very difficult. My brain automatically wanders to doing
stuff it is more naturally passionate about.

It's good to know a few of us are finding things the same... yeah it's hard.
I want to do right by my employer and know that I am but my focus is not
always 100% on work stuff during the day but then again a work day is not typical anymore :)

I think we just need to go easy on ourselves with this stuff. If I can look back at the end of the day and know I crossed a couple of things off my work list and/or move some stuff along then it's all good.

I also don't feel bad about taking a few hours out for walking or BBS or LPFM or... :)

Too hot, here, though it's also Labor Day, which is a US holiday that a large amount of people don't have to work.

I'm in that group, though I really do not understand my holidays or how
they're calculated, since I'm a German employee. But regardless of German holidays, if the site I'm working at is closed (or basically so), I'm not
going to work on that day.

So it's been nice. Took an 8k walk before it got to be too hot, then played
Age of Empires II with a (remote) friend.

It's a tad quiet, guessing it's either too hot or too cold to spend
time on a computer and send echomail?

It's not too bad here. We've been out and about, went to the doctors, got
    some scripts filled etc.

I bought a HP Z210 workstation from ebay, and have been messing about
with that.. a week after I bought it the same seller had some Z240s
listed for slightly more, kind of annoyed I would have bought that
    instead.

This one is a little bit older than I thought it was and isn't playing
nice with any modern graphics cards. So I'm kind of stuck with the Nvidia Quadro 400 it ccame with, which uses Nvidia 340.x drivers which are discontinued :( So, openSUSE have dropped the package, and so has fedora
    ubuntu etc.

I'm running freebsd on it right now. Also bought an AMD Radeon R5 for
~$30 from ebay, waiting for that to arrive, hoping it's old enough for
this machine yet supported with opensource drivers.

It did come with win 10 professional, but, I'm trying to give windows the
flick for good. I have one headless machine with win10 so I can compile
win32 versions of talisman and magiterm, but otherwise it's off.. oh and another one running all the time as our laser printer is a POS and wont
run with its wireless and only seems to work when plugged into usb on a
windows machine. (and even then, it needs a test page printed every time
it reboots as windows spooler seems to muck itself up and wont print
network jobs until a test page goes through.)

Just the requirements for Windows 11 are too high, it's highly unlikley I
will afford anything that will run it, and I have enough computers that
    run perfectly well.

Phew, that was a lot of rambling....

Though I'm kind of in a weird mood on the whole homicide thing because of

I bought a Synology NAS and have been learning all of the ins and outs of
it, and spent the weekend sorting through all of my documents, photos and movies, removing duplicates, moving them to the RAID, setting up a backup
task and playing with docker on the NAS.

I moved 1.1 gb of data to the raid, dropping my c: drive size to 224 GB. I might try replacing my 3tb c: drive with a 480 gb SSD.

My wife's new computer showed up, started setting it up. She needs her IT
guy (the one at her company) to help her set up the VPN as I don't have the OpenVPN certs.

In between all of this I did get out and enjoy what feels like the last bit

Too hot, here, though it's also Labor Day, which is a US holiday that a large amount of people don't have to work.

My belated reply to you. Nice you get a holiday!

they're calculated, since I'm a German employee. But regardless of German holidays, if the site I'm working at is closed (or basically so), I'm not going to work on that day.

Yep that will do it :)

So it's been nice. Took an 8k walk before it got to be too hot, then played Age of Empires II with a (remote) friend.

We're in spring mode now, lots of flowers starting to appear and blossom
coming out which is nice. Temps are all over the place though. We had a bad storm come through last night and several trees are down around the city.

I'd go walking more often but the weather is so pants right now :(

Sorry for the slow reply, been doing working from home stuff and trying not
to get too stir crazy being based at home all the time. It's not too bad most days but I find I need to get out for walks when I can just to get the change of scene. We've been under our NZ alert level 4 and 3 restrictions but
earlier this week those dropped to level 2.

That won't mean very much to you but suffice to say there are more people out and about again and businesses are returning to mostly normal now which is good. Auckland remains locked down in Level 4 restrictions but they are
making good progress to come down the levels too..

    [time passes]

I started this reply at the start of the day and now it's 4.24pm later on... been working at my desk and trying to keep on top of stuff... where was I...
    ah yeah..

I've been playing more with my LPFM station as of late. I updated my CentOS system with a new version of the playout software. This was a big deal for me as it involved new terminal command line stuff and it worked!

I've then built a new 'client' system from scratch over the last few days so
I can sit at a desk away from the on-air box but still get access to the
music library to update song metadata etc.

I am planning to revisit the music lists on my station and work on adding / removing songs over the coming weeks to freshen things.

I also want to build new hourly format clocks that dictate the order of songs and lists of songs played during the hour.

We've got family over for dinner each night (oldest son has no kitchen while they reno the place) and a few other kids coming over too... so full house tonight.

I've been sleeping rather poorly lately, up way to late and the successive number of days is starting to catch up with me. It feels like it's 9pm now
    and it's not :)

I plan to do some more FTN admin today and over the weekend as there are
nodes to add etc... and also more on the LPFM stuff.

    Best, Paul

The distractions in life... between several weekends that were Holidays

mix of very fine weather begging for outdoor time mixed with very poor weather filled with hurricanes, storms and record rains, heartwrenching news suggesting staying as far away from a computer screen or TV as possible, and.... well you get the idea.

Yeah fair enough. I find because I am now working from home and sat at the
same desk I usually 'play' at in the evenings it's become a bit harder to be here all day doing work stuff then try and sit for 3-4 hours longer to do BBS or other stuff.

It's also early spring where I am and still cold. The room I use is not that well insulated so evenings in a cooler room with the bar heater going
sometimes loose out to a warm room with the fire burning and netflix or
    disney+

Expect there may be lots of great recounting of adventures that will follow.

The dog and I went for a walk around the block. That's mostly it. It's my

I bought a Synology NAS and have been learning all of the ins and outs
of it, and spent the weekend sorting through all of my documents, photos and movies, removing duplicates, moving them to the RAID, setting up a backup task and playing with docker on the NAS.

I should set something up like this. Just have not spent any focused time on
on it. Confession time I still have an old Windows Home Server setup that
does some backups of boxes around the house. But it's not as good as it once was and certainly no longer supported. I do/did like the features it offers.

I moved 1.1 gb of data to the raid, dropping my c: drive size to 224 GB.
I might try replacing my 3tb c: drive with a 480 gb SSD.

I dropped a slightly smaller SSD into my daughters PC the other day. She was very happy with the performance boost. Good stuff on shifting that data over for you too.

My wife's new computer showed up, started setting it up. She needs her
IT guy (the one at her company) to help her set up the VPN as I don't
    have the OpenVPN certs.

We have a help desk that's based out of town. We used to have a local in
house help desk (much much better) but lost it to cost savings :( I miss our local guys. Now it's like you need to explain who you are, where you work and the problem. Meh

In between all of this I did get out and enjoy what feels like the last bit of summer here. The morning air has that crispness it gets when
    autumn moves in.

Yep the world keeps turning, daffodils outside and blossoms here but still

For those of us with central air, it's actually quite nice. BBS'ing for me these days is me stretched out on a couch with my laptop either reading messages or playing LORD or LORD2. The difficultly is when my cat decides IT wants to be on my lap & not my laptop.

It's been somewhat cooler yesterday and today with the temps around 22-23 and no humidex. Tomorrow we're back up yo 26 with a humidex of 30 though, so AC will come in handy there. The nights have been down to 11 though, haven't seen single digit temps there as of yet. Nothing to complain about though, at least until we have to start shovelling our drveways.

As far as I know we don't have any keyloggers installed. We do monitor apps that are *installed* but since Netrunner & Syncterm are just standalone .exe's they don't seem to show up on any lists as an installed application.

We do have remote support tools that allow us to take control of a user's machine and other security software that will actually disconnect you from the network should anything malicious be found.

i use a seprate laptop for BBSing. that way they cant sniff my traffic over the VPN, and see me on the BBS.

I was actually surprised we don't block telnet or SSH to random remote hosts on the internet. Even if they did, I could just use ftelnet from a website to connect in when I'm in the office. When working from home only traffic destined for work servers go over the internet, everything else goes out my home internet.

truth be told I *should* be working now but during lockdowns etc. things get
a bit more loose as a goose :)

    Thank you! :)
I'm still there and take a little time to look through echomails :)

Nice thanks for doing so :)

but I've been distracted by my other past interests in running a LPFM station

    'low power FM'?

Yep it's a 1 watt station that broadcasts over the city I live in, has a
range of about 7-10km but I also stream it online at totalfm.nz

We don't know either what the future will bring.'
For us, international travel or even flying won't be an option for a very long time, so we're happy that this place is so nice and we're thinking about travelling here the next years.
Honestly, it isn't so much different to flying to an island - given
what we're doing there and here ;)

Yep agree, we may travel domestically a little bit later this year subject to how things are going in the country but otherwise I expect we will sit tight too.

Well for us yanks over in the states, we just got off a 3 day (well 4
    day in my
case) weekend closing out the summer. So I am sure many were out of town for the last hurrah of summer. Me personally I was busy setting up a old computer with XP and setting up my old TAG bbs setup. After getting half way through I kinda realized while it was a nice trip down nostalgia
lane I had a really nice

I hope you had a nice time Jeff.

Long weekends always go so darn fast!

I also want to build new hourly format clocks that dictate
the order of songs and lists of songs played during the

Some kind of list that provides the planned structure/order of
upcoming songs would be cool. Or, have a show based on a theme
    or style of music.

After hearing a tune on some streaming sites, a history list is
a good reference to get info about a song that would otherwise
    be missed.

That sounds nice. I generally sit in front of the same PC and screens I use for work related stuff during the day but in the evening they point
at my BBSing stuff etc. For the most part it works OK but working from home more means there are days I just have a break from BBSing as I
will end up spending way to much time in one spot otherwise.

Yeah, same seat, different task. From the same seat I could play Warthunder
on my desktop PC, RDP into the BBS to run maintenance or RDP into my work laptop. I've started taking my laptop into the garden for work calls, it
helps to get a little change of scenery.

I think we are all going through the same thing. There are work things
that I'm supposed to be doing, but finding the motivation when WFH all the
time is very difficult. My brain automatically wanders to doing stuff it is more naturally passionate about.

I've been listening to TotalFM the past two days while working from home. One of the best parts is no commercials! :)

Caught myself tapping my toe to a few songs and even shazam'ing a couple (I Love You Always Forever by Betty Who which is a re-make a the version I know from high school).

If I could request a song? "Tal Bachman - She's So High"

I remember liking that one from high school as well.

Absolutely Paul, if we going hard on ourselves for 'not doing enough work'
then we are just going to wind up having nervous breakdowns because we are always pushing ourselves in an unrealistic way, very unhealty on the mind.

Do what makes us happy, I think that most good employers are understanding of this and that we are all doing our bit, it's just that our bit isn't quite
    what it used to be.

It's a tad quiet, guessing it's either too hot or too cold to spend
time on a computer and send echomail?

    Best, Paul

Think I just got it today. Not sure what was holding up outgoing binkd
calls on this end but, after taking it down for a few hours, it immediately called out when I brought it back up. <shrugs>

We're not working from home, we're WORKING THROUGH A PANDEMIC. We've had to deal with school closures, remote schooling, loss of hours and loss of jobs, people we know getting sick, politics getting into public health policy, economic pressure to open again, and a ton of jobs going away, and we're
    still contributing.
