it because it was just so... muzak-y. At one point the hygienist took
her hands out of my mouth and I took that opportunity to glance at the screen, it was Believer by Imagine Dragons!

Hi MATT,
I was on hold for 2 hours 17 minutes. I was lucky resolution happened. It was one song with 2-3 messages rotated like please don't hang up.
How many times can you handle hearing the same 12 songs eh? ;-)

I recall once I did a voicework job for a Taxi company, I had to say
those 'please hold for a operator' style messages etc and then played
some pre-recorded phone ringing sounds.. etc.
Jump forward about a month later, I was out late, had been drinking and needed a Taxi home. I called the number only to hear myself saying
'please wait etc.' ring ring, ring ring... :)

was the band playing their hits -- as elevator music. You could still recognize the twangy guitar, but your brain had a hard time connecting the tune you're listening to to "Jocko Homo", or "Whip It".

I once worked in telecom, and we used a discman for our music on hold. Realized that after a power outage it'd gotten bumped and the "repeat" button was pressed. It played the same song over and over again for
about 3 weeks.
Another friend of mine worked in IT and used to find great odd CDs for music on hold. One that I loved was Devo's "Easy Listening Disc". It was the band playing their hits -- as elevator music. You could still recognize the twangy guitar, but your brain had a hard time connecting

My boss spent the weekend recording the thing, and you'd hear one of the prompts he'd recorded on Saturday morning, followed by a prompt recorded on Sunday afternoon, after he'd recorded hundreds of prompts.
The difference in his voice between prompts recorded at the beginning
and the end was striking.
We bought him a little jar of cough drops for his desk. :)

Reminds me of a time I was listening to the radio during breakfast and
the DJ played U2 Desire... and played it all morning and only, even putting callers to air asking for him to stop and only for him to say thanks for calling and here's U2 and Desire...
It was his last day on air that day. I think he had had a beef with management and boy did it show that morning :)

To think there was/is such a thing :) I'd say it would fetch a pretty
penny at some retro auction now :)
