You have a fan in Wellington :)

Thanks Al, appreciate the kind feedback. I'll try and keep up some of the on-air shifts.. it's a bit easier to do in lockdown to be fair :)

Indeed, so is working on BBSes ;)

If you have a schedule that you're on air, let me know, I'd love to tune in then since I'm at home I can listen in most of the time.

    Cheers,

I've done two nights in a row interviewing for B2BBS, last night was Purple Motion and Skaven from the demoscene group, Future Crew, and tonight was a great fan of the channel talking about his BBS experiences. I also have a great interview with Jim Leonard (trixter Mobygames). Gonna be great if you are into demoscene / music tracker scene.

wow thats awesome! i cant wait to see it! The cool thing about Back to
the BBS, is its not just history, we are riding the BBS2.0 wave now. :-) its awesome to be here for that. Back in 2008 when i first started doing research into BBSing, the only thing i could find on BBSs was how it was used in the 80s, and now the only BBSs were hosted in the Phillipine Islands, due to lack of good interenet connections. Im glad the BBS is making a comeback. we seem to see new faces and BBSs everyday.
    very exciting times :-)

Thanks gc! Yep, I really think these are interesting times for BBSes. It had already started before B2BBS kicked off, but I'm seeing new BBSes and new BBS users pop up it feels like on a daily basis at the moment!

It really does feel like it is BBS 2.0!

    Cheers,
    Al

8:30pm here in Ontario, Canada. Just set up a projector in the living room for no particular reason to watch a movie on a bigger screen. Not sure what we're watching just yet, but have Dr. Strange on to test out the settings, focus & brightness.

That's nice, you can sell the sizzle of using a computer differently, more to life than social media.

It's just a cheapie one from Amazon (Wiselazer) but it worked well enough.

It wasn't as bright as I would have liked, had to turn off all the lights to see the movie at all, and even then dark scenes weren't that great. Reading some suggestions mention moving the projector closer to the screen and/or getting a better screen that isn't just white, but also reflective.

Monday morning now, I didn't look in yesterday. I got carried away watching a Supercars rerun of Bathurst 2001... a nominal full race.. it showed some ~6.5hrs in ~3... so badly chopped up, but then it was commercial TV back then so ad breaks and all the rest of it.

I'm not sure, because I can't find my little entry passes, but I suspect 2001 might be one of the years I went.

Hmm I'd give my left testicle and first born (there is only one) for a really good Apple pie. Used to be able to make one once.. it was a recipe that hung over from high school, don't know what happened to it, and I've long lost the knack for just making it sans instructions. The Macca's apple pies here aren't to bad if the store actually cooks it right and its not six months old when you get it.

It wasn't as bright as I would have liked, had to turn off all the lights to see the movie at all, and even then dark scenes weren't that great. Reading some suggestions mention moving the projector closer to the screen and/or getting a better screen that isn't just white, but also reflective.

Whats it nominal brightness? I haven't been near a new projctor in years, but I bought a new Cannon about 30 years ago now. BAck when I got it, it was being sold by an A/V store. They gave the suggestions of distance/lighting, but the lumens "all new" projectors put out was sufficient to not require the reflective screen. At the time I still had access to my parents old slide projector screen, and it tended to make things look a tad strange, over bright/intense. The best nominal colour for the wall was also suggested a pale mushroom kind of colour. Over time I found they'd cope with all sorts of colours even quite dark ones. You could always try boosting the brightness in the source rather than at the projector too..

I picked up a Synology NAS chassis at a junk shoppe and have been like a kid in a candy store. Thought it was just a RAID enclosure, turns out there's a torrent client, web proxy, DNS/Radius/Directory/SSO servers, and a ton more
to play with. Time to move all of my linux shares off of CIFS and onto NFS.

The Air Quality Index is creeping higher due to a couple of big fires - thankfully nothing near us this year. Here on the California coast it's not too bad, but over the hill in Silicon Valley the AQI was creeping near 175.
It might be time to break out my crude-but-effective air cleaner - a 20 inch box fan with a MERV 13 furnace filter cable-tied to the front.

Bummer hummer. There's no issues here at the moment. But when our summer arrives and fires start to kick off again it can be an issue at times.
Actually come to think of it last time it was more to do with smoke coming across the Tasman sea from Australian bush fires :( I hope our Aussie mates don't have to endure that again but it seems to be getting worse each year at the moment.

I've done two nights in a row interviewing for B2BBS, last night was Purple Motion and Skaven from the demoscene group, Future Crew, and tonight was a great fan of the channel talking about his BBS experiences. I also have a
great interview with Jim Leonard (trixter of Mobygames). Gonna be great if
you are into demoscene / music tracker scene.

    Cheers,
    Al

You may be able to throw FreeNAS on it, then you get all the benefits
that freebsd provides. (I did that to my QNAP.)

That's not a bad idea; it appears that it's limited to an older version
of the OS. No complaints for $130. :)

    Responding to myself...

I found a tweak to let the DS1010+ download the newer OS updates. Besides
the LAN1 and LAN2 lights being reversed, no ill effects so far.

The new OS has a proper shell and sudo, the older OS just had busybox.

Dude I really like your station and the show was great. Great balance of music and the station plays like the sort of radio I listened to when I was a teenager and loved radio.

You have a fan in Wellington :)

Thanks Al, appreciate the kind feedback. I'll try and keep up some of the on-air shifts.. it's a bit easier to do in lockdown to be fair :)

    Hi all.

Wondering who's about on this Sunday morning here in NZ?

    Best, Paul

    I wasn't at the time. :-)

And I'm reading/replying offline, if it matters. :-)

Thanks dude. I will be making a video at some point on how Gary Kildall, the man behind CP/M and Digital Research Limited lost out to Microsoft
and DOS for the IBM, it will be presented in a similar vein to the IBM/8088 one.

wow thats awesome! i cant wait to see it! The cool thing about Back to the
BBS, is its not just history, we are riding the BBS2.0 wave now. :-) its awesome to be here for that. Back in 2008 when i first started doing research into BBSing, the only thing i could find on BBSs was how it was used in the 80s, and now the only BBSs were hosted in the Phillipine Islands, due to lack of good interenet connections. Im glad the BBS is making a comeback. we seem
to see new faces and BBSs everyday.
    very exciting times :-)

    Thanks

Indeed, so is working on BBSes ;)

If you have a schedule that you're on air, let me know, I'd love to tune in then since I'm at home I can listen in most of the time.

    Cheers,
    Al

Thanks gc! Yep, I really think these are interesting times for BBSes. It had already started before B2BBS kicked off, but I'm seeing new BBSes and new BBS users pop up it feels like on a daily basis at the moment!

It really does feel like it is BBS 2.0!

    Cheers,

Not really, I have been doing 6am-9am most days but quite often it's
7pm-8/9pm at night after dinner :) Which I am doing now :)
