• A need for fsx_intros or something?

From Ruslan Ivanyuk@21:3/144 to JoE DooM on Mon Jul 12 23:44:10 2021
Hi Ruslan, I don't think I've had the pleasure, so nice to meet you. :)

The pleasure is mine :) I think there was a brief announcement about new people added to the nodelist recently, but perhaps that was too brief to get noticed by a large audience :-P

Also, I don't think FTNs in general (and fsxNet specifically) include any prompt for a particular person to contact another particular person in a similar fashion to social media services, other than throwing them somewhere in the middle of a discussion. I mean, there is a node application form here (in the infopack), there are occasionally a few forms on a few BBS'es that kinda-sorta profile you according to your name, location, blood type, whatever - but that's more often than not for the SysOp (RC, ZC) to know, not for the general public.

So here is my (somewhat belated) attempt at proper self-introduction.

    researching hobbyist networks (FTN, Fediverse)
    and content presentation technologies
    (Gopher, Gemini), general chatting

Sorry for the late reply, I've been offline for a few days and
    I'm quite
    behind.
That's understandable with FTN. Instant replies are usually not
expected, so, if our emergency departments were on here, we'd be so
    screwed! :)

Well, so much for being a few days behind.. I've been away for a few
months. :/ Hope you'll forgive me for appearing rude.

It's odd that I got out of the habit of logging in for a couple of weeks,
and the longer you drop off your habits, the harder it is to pick them up.

I even put an alarm in my calendar so that I would set aside some time on Saturday mornings at 9:30am to log in. And the very first time the alarm
rang I wasn't home. Same for the next weekend. That was over a month ago
    now. haha

Fingers crossed I'll log back in again this year.

But back to our conversation Ruslan... :)

Pathfinder 1E (D&D 3.5/OSR multiverse is the best thing made possible
with OGL). Also, Munchkin, Dixit, Apples to Apples, Smallworld --
    things of that nature.

Cool. I have got out of playing D&D and derivatives. Too many rules for
me in my old age. :) I really want to run a Call of Cthulhu group. I ran
a one-on-one for a friend of mine who's on the other side of the country
and that was a lot of fun, but most people I know love the combat
oriented games and don't like the thinking games.

I also want to run Rifts and Palladium Fantasy because I love the crazy unbalanced worlds. :)

Munchkin is awesome. Hm, you're making me want to set up a gaming group
again. Now it's summer here, I might be able to bribe some people by
feeding them with a BBQ lunch. :)

Oh, cool! Greetings to Te Whanganui-a-Tara from a steppe nature
reserve in Southern Ukraine :) Be cool, stay safe, and all the best
    wishes to you :)

A steppe nature reserve sounds awesome.
Thank you and same to you.

D&D only started getting bulky around 3rd edition. I am not a great fan of the new editions - I can have fun with them, but I prefer the old stuff if available. D&D B/X is very easy to run, on the other hand. Still I think there are better systems out there. Old versions od D&D are only convenient because there is a lot of material out there you can recycle for those who are too young to know the old modules.

Munchkin is fine as a drunktard game. As a wits game for euromgamers who have a piece of ice for a heart (ie me) it falls short because optimal play leads for overly long games in which nothing of notice happens until the end. That said, if you have bourbon enough you can make it work.

It's not really a large audience. :) haha But it is dedicated. :)

more often than not for the SysOp (RC, ZC) to know, not for the
    general public.

That's true, and you raise a good point. Of course, some people may not
wish to be so public about their lives, but I'm sure many won't mind.

playing board games and tabletop RPGs,

Ah excellent. What do you play?

I haven't played any games for a long time, but love board games, RPG,
    and wargames.

For RPGs, D&D is the old warhorse, but I got tired of it so pulled out of
the games I was playing a couple of years ago. But I've played most RPGs.
I really want to run a Call of Cthulhu game, as well as Rifts and
Palladium, but not enough people who are interested in playing games
other than D&D and Pathfinder around here. At least not regularly.

I found myself moving more into wargames because "pickup games" are much
    easier to organise. :)

    researching hobbyist networks (FTN, Fediverse)

Ah very cool. I played around with Friendica a few years back, and one of
my friends in Australia has dumped twitter for Mastadon recently. He and
I were both messing around with Friendica at the time.

btw - I am from Wellington in New Zealand. :)

Friendica is lovely. I once thought about setting up my own instance (many open servers tend to create a more or less "safe space" for newcomers by trimming off some potentially harmful content -- which I myself would have nothing against, but most people in this day and age are a bit more sensitive to that, so it's nice of the admins to cater to those individuals).

btw - I am from Wellington in New Zealand. :)

Interesting to note that you play a heavy RPG and then prefer light board games.

I am the other way around myself.
