Thank God you don't live in Shitonto, Ontario. :-)
Happy New Year and Shalom to you as well. :-)
Hi there, I wanted to pop in and say hello. My name is Sonya and I'm
from
Seattle. This is my first time really getting into BBSs - my husband
has used
them since childhood and has raved about them for years. I thought I
would
join the fun and see what it's all about.

Har to believe 2020 is almost over - this has been the longest and shortest year simultaneously. It hasn't been all bad - I got into gardening a bit this year and managed to grow some tomatoes, basil, strawberries, and arugula. I've got some garlic and onion overwintering right now as well.
I am hoping to turn my attention now to astronomy for a bit. I've signed up for an intro class for fun and just purchased a new telescope (a Zhumell Z130) that I now get to figure out how it exactly works!
Looking forward to chatting with everyone during the coming year. Hope you all have a Happy New Year and here's hoping 2021 is better than 2020

Right on, l0nepinemall! I'm Paul... well, another Paul - as Avon is also Paul and thats who's BBS you're posting from.
Glad you decided to jump on the BBS train and checkout what we're all up to in history-land. :P Hope you like the textmode fun that BBSes are...
You've already found fsxNet, which is the most active message network on BBSes in... lol, 2021. You might like door games, and theres plenty of files to be had too... most are BBS-related, retro-computing, ANSI/text art packs and sometimes a sysOp's personal collection or interests. The best thing you'll find here is the community - the people. We're all pretty unique and I'd even say a fun group.
Hi, Sonya! Welcome to fsxNet -- and BBSin'! Great to have you here.
New blood!
Nice! The season in Utah was a bit meh, but I did manage to have a ton
of tomatoes, various herbs, some peppers, pumkins, onions, and berries.
I never manage to get more than one round of strawberries - my sister about 45 min away has batch after batch. Someday maybe I'll figure out
Act fast and you can get some great shots at the planets. My father purchased some nutty lense for his cameras - can just point and click to see rings on Saturn. Pretty slick.
Hello Sonya / l0nepinemall!
Welcome! Yes, many of us have fond memories of BBSes from the days
before Internet (and onwards). It's nice to see people "returning" to where all the fun started. =)
It's also a more relaxed atmosphere on the echomail message networks compared to all the social media platforms.
Wishing you a Happy New 2021, too!

Seems like the fun has stuck around too - everyone seems to be having a great time from what I have seen so far :)
Wow, sounds like you had great success! I had some issues with my strawberries myself (although mine were more of the fuzzy, zorro-masked animal variety - everytime I would wait a day to pick one, I'd come back and the full berry and stem would be clean chomped off!). I tried to grow a red bell pepper but it never matured enough and stayed small and green.
Still tasted okay though. Seattle weather probably didn't give it enough time in the sunshine to grow! I have some onions overwintering right now - I sure hope they turn out okay!
sneak a peek. Your father's lenses sound amazing - I would love to see the rings on Saturn with my own eyes! What is he using?

this year and managed to grow some tomatoes, basil, strawberries, and arugula. I've got some garlic and onion overwintering right now as well. We've worked on a few house projects as well and definitely had our fair share of lazy days with movies, candy, and wine. I am hoping to turn my attention now to astronomy for a bit. I've signed up for an intro class for fun and just purchased a new telescope (a Zhumell Z130) that I now get to figure out how it exactly works!
Hi Sonya! My name is April, and while I'm in Germany, saying where I'm from is harder.
I was going to make some joke about Seattle weather, but then remembered that it's cloudy/rainy more often in Germany (or at least most of it)
than it is in Seattle, and it's not like it's always devoid of the night sky, here.
So, yeah, that sounds like fun. I had some friends in the US who had a nice telescope and had a good view of the Saturn/Jupiter conjunction,
and doing things like that seems pretty cool.
Especially if we get lucky and have another surprise comet pop by.
Welcome here, and I do hope you get to see the same good parts about BBSing that your husband has (and maybe other good parts about BBSing, too, that he doesn't yet know).
What's also nice about FSXnet is that there's a no-politics rule, so
while we occasionally stray close (or into) politics with things like COVID, for the most part people stay on board with the network being
kind of a refuge from a lot of the things that plague other parts of the internet.
Personally, I like the near-complete lack of memes. Well, of the, "share this image" sort.
I mostly grow hot pepper/chiles. The sweet pepper attempts have always yielded only a couple small ones and other creatures like them too much. Definitely have that issue with strawberries - I actually bit a wire
cage around one area, the the other solution is to just plant them all over the place and hope to have enough to get a few.
I'm not actually sure. I just know it's huge. He's also on some waiting list for another larger one I guess. Should be interesting.
Welcome to fsxNet :)
I'm Anna from Karlsruhe, Germany - it's nice to see other women here :) I've used BBSes in the 90s and also used FidoNet back then, but some
weeks ago I decided to start BBSing again :)
This sounds nice, I hope you can enjoy it!
We also did more things at home, I've built my second retrocomputing
kit, a CP/M computer and created a case for it using a 3D printer. That took a while designing, testing and printing :)
I hope you have a good start into the new year!
Hi Anna! So nice to meet you. It's funny, I was told that women rarely use BBSs but I have already communicated with two
since joining! :) So cool!

Wow, that's so cool! I had to look up with CP/M meant, ha! :) I am not
quite as well versed as some on the old school stuff. But that is super neat. How long did it take to build everything from design to finish? I have never used a 3D printer but they seem super awesome.
I hope you have a good start into the new year!Thank you, you as well! Hope to chat with you more on here soon.
Hi April! So nice to meet you. I have heard there are often not many women on BBSs so it's neat to meet one straightaway!
been raining non-stop since the New Year! It normally is fairly rainy
and grey this time of year, but this seems extreme! I have been trying
to get more active to start the year and have had to fight some
downpours to get my walking in!
Thank you so much! Yes, so far it has been great. Lots of fun learning
to use a BBS and figuring out all the unique features of each one. I
know there is a lot more to still see.
Looking forward to connecting more in the future!

Yeah, nice that it seems like there are a few of us. It's nice if there
are enough that people don't just assume "gents" or whatever.
Thank you so much! Yes, so far it has been great. Lots of fun learning
to use a BBS..
And at some point you'll probably get the impulse to become a sysop. :)
That said, definitely no pressure on that count, since non-sysop users are uncommon, these days.
What's also nice about FSXnet is that there's a no-politics rule
Oh yes, that is definitely a bonus! I quit some social media in 2020 becauseall of the silly political arguments were just too much. Also it'srefreshing to get a break from all the shared images and connect
over actualcontent and communication :)
Oh nice! Peppers in general are pretty hard to grow here in Seattle. We just don't get enough sunny days. I'm sure it's fun to grow the hot ones!
Do you ever make salsa with them?
So.. by your guesstimate, how many vocal women are represented in
this hobby? (Janis K, yourself, April, and Anna? ..is that it?)
I wouldn't assume that non-sysop users are so uncommon. Just

Okay, I'll cede the point, because I hope you're correct. :)

And then you can go down again in 3 months!
...but there's some fun to be had just exploring software. But it'd be nice more as point nodes or something that's not really meant to be
called or interact with other BBSs.

Being a non-sysop is cool, and I did that for a while, but not many
sysops give their users unlimited time - they still have automatic inactivity logouts.
For me that's frustrating because I could have typed half of a long message, got up to turn off the noodles, then come back to a screen that says "You've been logged out due to inactivity!"
It also feels good to know that I'm not being watched while I'm using a BBS. Being your own sysop removes anxiety about "What's Mr Tightwad
gonna think?"
One last perk I'll mention: Other BBSs can disappear without warning.
That kills conversations, and it makes people lose their rank in doors.
I started this BBS because I've wanted to since I was a teenager. If people call it, fine. If not, Still fine. I've run points off and on
Yeah, that's never fun. That's a reason I went to Offline mail readers before I discovered points.
I never thought about that. I did have a couple of sysops back when that would pop into chat with me while I was replying to a message though.
There is that. I've had that happen plenty of times. Not so much with doors, I never really got into the InterBBS league games.
